hack and slash kinda side scrolling

ok i dont expect anyone to know this game, but i'll give it a try,
i haven't played this for over 14 years, but i remember it being about a boy (i think), who has to save his town, or somehow he ends up in a place with monsters to kill.
The game involves, going underground, through tunnels, and killing badguys (with swords).
the only think that's distinctive that i remember was that the background (the dirt) changed colours as you finished a level/place. it started as a red background with round bubble-like things outlined in black and seeming to pop out.
well i know im not being very helpful, but if anyone has any fleeting hint of what game this might be, i'd appreciate it
