ES1869 soundcard problem

I have a sound issue with DOS games on a win98se system. I have an ESS 1869 sound card (ISA card).
Namely, in most DOS games I get all the sound effects but no music. Let's take Duke Nukem 3D for example - when I run "Test Sound FX Card" from Setup, everything is OK, but running "Test Music Card" gives me only silence (no error messages, just silence). I have tried using different settings with the DOS configuration utility for my card (esscfg.exe), but to no avail.
When I had previously Win95 installed, I didn't have these problems. So my guess is that the DOS sound issues are related to the WDM drivers (as opposed to VXD drivers) that come with Win98se.
Has anyone ever solved this kind of a problem?
