Problems with sound?

Post by 486 player »

1. Before all, READ ALL manuals and text files came with thy sound card! And follow instructions!
2. Install DOS drivers. (If card has any.)
3. Run configure program and configure card. If possible, set it Sound Blaster Pro mode to DOS.
4. Default settin's (for Sound Blaster an compatible) in autoexec.bat.

set blaster=A220 D3 I7 (or 5 because DOS4GW (GUS too))
setsound16=c:\driver\driver.exe

7. Test card. If thou don't hear anythin' try other options.
6. Run every games' setup' or setsound.exe. and set up as in autoexec.bat.
7. Some games initializes card when loadin'.
8. If no sound, read game's readme.txt or gamename.doc for help.
9. In newest Windowses (Xp, ME) try vdmsound.

I believe it increases Dos's memory allocation.

DOS4GW is a DOS extender (it became the DOS extender).

It allows programs and games to access memory beyond the 640K limit imposed by DOS's architecture. It's lovely :love: B)

If any device uses IRQ higher than 10, game doesn't work properly, locks up or doesn't load.

DON'T rechange IRQ from 7 to 5, if it's a Sound Blaster clone. It may cause some sounds to stop after playin' for awhile. (Epic Pinball, Major Stryker...???)

PCI sound cards are not intended to work in DOS, although there's a tiny chance.
