missing .dat file in prince of persia 4d

Post by GameDog »

i downloaded pop4d and i scanned through the files and noticed levels.dat was missing. This file appeared in the original game and i couldn't find it in 4d. Last time i played the game i didn't pay attention to see if it was there, but i assume it was. The game and all its files got deleted by mistake so i redownload them and thats when i noticed it was missing. When i tried to run the game on that same occasion, a dos window appeared saying it could not find all the files. It's not the first time it has happened. So, a little help here please?

thanks

Level.dat is not a missing file in Pop4D. The original Prince of Persia had the levels sets in level.dat. However for Prince of Persia 4D, the level sets are in kirill.dat.

What was the exact message you got about missing files?

First a non-dos window pops up and asks "Replace existing 4d_prin.exe?"
I click yes and the dos window comes up with the message:

"Unable to find neccasary files.
Please start program from the
default drive and dicrectory.

Hope you enjoyed it - PC cr(H)acker & Badsoft"

Any ideas?

Have you tried the download at dosachive? If not, try it and see whether you still get the same error. I suspect it might be a mixture in files or you may have existing similar files.

That's were I downloaded it in the first place. And here's something I left out:
After it asks "Replace existing 4d_prin.exe?" It states "Replace existing kirill.dat?"
then "Replace existing guard1.dat?" And it goes on asking the same thing for every file. I pressed yes for every one. One time I pressed no but it gave me the same results. Any more clues?

Either JKSM is ignoring me or doesn't care anymore. The wait is getting very long.

Nope I'm not ignoring you. It just that the nature of my work required me to work late the past few days. Imagine starting work each day at 8:30am and working till over 2am the next day. I had not enough sleep not to mention having the time to do other stuff like reading this forum. Anyway that's my problem not yours :D It's now over and time to relax.

Okay back to your problem. I tried downloading from dosachive and it works fine. First need to check with you maybe you already have a copy of the game somewhere on your harddisk but you were unaware or forgot about it. I would only get windows message "replace xxxxx.exe" when extracting to the same folder as an existing one with similar files.

2 questions:
1) Could you check whether you already have an existing copy of the game on your harddisk.
2) Are you having problem with your unzipping program? If so, try Winzip or Winrar.

Could you also try extracting to a different name folder instead.

Answers:

1) I looked in the hard drive and found some duplicate files of the executable (4d_prin.exe) one of the file that runs the game itself and two shortcuts. I deleted them.

2) I don't seem to have any problem with my unzipping program, Ken Wards Zipper.

Before I unzipped the game I moved the zip file to a different folder I hade made for it. Maybe the problem is the file needs to be in its original default location.
Or maybe the problem is that I also have the original game on my hard drive, but its in a different file.

Never mind. The game is working. I guess the problem was duplicate executable files. All fixed now.
