VDMSound won't work!!! Please help!!!
I recently got a new computer, (Windows XP) and now the sound won't work and any of my dosgames. I downloaded VDMsound, but when I try to run a game through it a window pops up saying "Access Denied". I've read lot's of these topics, and followed them step by step, and unfortunatly, no sound. I also have download Dosbox, and ttpatch. Any suggestions? I'm starting to wish I had my old buster computer!!!
I've seen many people looking for help on older games so I decided to post this on random forums, soooo here I am.
VDMS
1) If you have slowdowns on your game:
- Simply right click on the VDMS settings for that game press: advanced>performance and cheak "try to reduse PC usage" and usally on the LSL 7, KQ 7, and SQ 6, on my 800mhz cpu (crap) the bar will be set all the way to the left.
2) If your game closes or freezes for no appearent reason:
- This could be due to slowdowns or it could be many of other settings so you may want to run a log on each thing and see what the game is complaining about.
To do this Right-click on the VDMS settings file for your game go to: Advanced>Troubleshooting and cheak "Diagnostic Log" and set the scroll-down to errors only. Then you can narrow it down via google or the manual.
3) No vesa support:
- Easy fix just Right click on the VDMS settings file and cheak "enable basic VESA support"
4) If your a bad boy and the game is hacked but it can't find the cd:
- click on the VDMS settings file and cheak "enable low-level CD-ROM support"
5) Crashes at a point for no reason (after I messed with slowdown):
- Sometimes newer non-dos or dos both may need fixes because the programs wont read it right so you may want to search for an official patch or a fix for your certain problem (like if it freezes in one spot only).
6) Older DOS games:
- Most games will start up on VDMS, but may be slow this is where the "reduse PC usage" comes in handy, and even try "cap DOS timer frequency"
7) Sound on older DOS games:
- the best way to fix this problem is to go to the install (open it with VDMS) and look at the compatibilities it has, If it has Adlib (and you want a quick fix) use it because it has less changes to be involved and uncheak soundblaster.
- If you want better quality (and it has Soundblaster ability) then uncheak Adlib and tinker with the SB options (try making the versions lower) don't complicate things. (if the game has the certian type of SB it is then obviously use that one)
- Most older DOS games require "Roland MT-32, LAPC-1 or CM-64" setting found in the VDMS setting file for that game. (Midi's give the game sound effects)
8) My DOS game wont start at all:
- Sometimes the game takes a second to start, so just look at your "scroll lock" and see if it's blinking, if so it's not frozen.
- This delay could be a timer problem (fix above) or it could be for it trying to load a different sound type like SB when you have it installed to Adlib only or whatever.
9) My Game STILL wont start:
- This could be due to other settings, I suggest tinkering with the options and even taking the sound completly off (to see if thats the problem) or even try a log and see why it's closing and veiw the guid or Google it.
10) I tried everything and it STILL wont work:
- Try messing with the installer and make sure it doesn't error, if the installer is on a CD make sure it's not trying to install TO the cd instead on the hard drive.
11) Alternate emulators for older games:
- For games like: LSL 1-5, KQ 1-5, SQ 1-5 (and many many more) try:
Dosbox
- For almost any LucasArts game like: Sam and Max, DOTT, Indy, Zak Mckraken, and a few non-Lucasarts games then use this:
ScummVM
- For games like LSL1, KQ1, SQ1 and more use this:
NAGI
- For games like LSL2-3, KG4, PQ2, and more try:
FreeSCI
Lots of these "emulators" have features to improve the gfx and sound and most are easy to use.
Hope this helped if you need help just post
