Sound problems! Please help!

Hey
I recently got a new computer, and I'm having problems with the sound and music when I download games. I love all the dos games, especially the sidescrollers, but as I am sure you know, the music sometimes makes the game. I've checked all the volume controls, and I have double checked to make sure the music is turned on, but still, nothing works. Sadly this is with all my games not just one or two. If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated!
