ahh..alright, I let my parents pick out a computer a few months ago..and basically it sucks. It came with 256 mb RAM..which I've since added a 128 stick..so its at least respectable. It runs on a Celeron processor..which I hate, but when I looked at removing it, it looked almost soddered on..is that possible? Also..how do I check which motherboard my computer is using? like..I want to know the specs on it..sorry, I'm just now getting into the "building your own computer" stuff haha

As for if the CPU is soldered on, it shouldn't be. Ever since the 486 era, Intel decided to use ZIF sockets, for easy removal and insertion. I sure hope they didn't solder it on, it would probably be a dumb idea to do so with any CPU nowadays.

However, it might be the fan that not soldered on but rather has a heatsink substance on it. There are rumors you can free it then "pop" it off but I highly doubt that.

Elign, compaq and hp soldered em on so people can't remove them and replace them. This due to the fact that it voids the warranty.
