Descent sound is buggy

I downloaded the descent demo, installed it, and whatnot, but the sound doesn't work. I'm in XP, and I can't get dosbox or vdm sound to work.
note, the sound EFFECTS. I chose general midi for music and that works fine. In the setup screen, the only sound configuration that works is plain sound blaster, but the sound is buggy. Say, when I shoot, it skips about half a second of sound , and plays two seperate sound effects per sound. The longer running sounds, like a fan spining, works fine, but the short sounds (which, unfortunately, is about 95% of the sound in the game) are all emssed up. Any other sound card I choose plays nothing. Did I choose the wrong Port, DMA and IRQ settings?
(also, if you know how to fix, the turn rate is really slow. Takes about eight seconds to do a 180 turn.)
