Games that run and games that don't

Hello to all,
I just discovered this forum and think it's great. For quite a while I have been getting back into playing my old DOS/Win 3.1 games, got some running, and have problems with others. So I created a list of both and would appreciate any hint on the critical stuff, as much as I am willing to help with those that run on my machine (6 years old 400 MHz, 64MB RAM, Win 2000 Pro).
Running fine:
Laura Bow 1 and 2, with VDMS
Kings Quest 1 SGI, 2, 3, 4 (classic), with VDMS - of course, 2 and 3 just beep around via the PC internal speaker
Also the old Windows games
Kings Quest 7, Lighthouse, Torin's Passage and both Shivers games run smoothly.
Lost In Time: a bit itchy, but running, more or less, switching back and forth to run in DOSBox / VDMS
Space Quest : Windows only, DOSBox/VDMS crash whenever keyboard (e.g. for saving games) is used
Critical:
All those which were created for both DOS and Windows, such as
Kings Quest 5 and 6, Gabriel Knight 1:
Both start in DOS Box, but then have scratchy sound and no speech at all, which, of course, makes them unplayable.
For these, I have been trying all kinds of setup configurations both in DOSBox and in VDMS, but never get far. DOSBox reacts as mentioned above, and in VDMS they just freeze at the Sierra logo.
Anybody experienced the same and can give me some really helpful input? I learned from other forums, that even fast machines with XP create the same problems as my PC, and solutions for XP often helped me, too.
Thanks a lot,
Cat
