X-com: messed up screen issues

Hullo,
I have a 1.8 GHz HP laptop, running Win XP Home. I have installed X-COM collectrion, and it runs, with sound, but the screen is messed up, and is streched out and layered horizotally across the top half the the moniter. I saw the other X-COM post w/ a similar problem, and i was wondering how i would go about going into the video settings and changing the verticle sync. any other suggestions to solve this screen problem would be much apreciated as well. Thanx.

The game probably assumes that your screen is set at 25 lines, while Windows XP uses 43 or 50 lines. Thus the game would only use the first 25 lines.
Download this program into your C:\WINDOWS directory:
http://advsys.net/ken/util/nv.com
Then go to Command Prompt, use the CD command to go to the game's directory, type NV and press Enter, then run the game from that Command Prompt window.

No luck there. any other suggestions? I've been dying to fix this problem. i found that if i disable my 3d card, it will run, but only in low res, so the screen size is about half the size of the moniter, and runs really fast. How do i change the verticle-sync through the video settings in XP?

Note: there is a risk of doing damage to your monitor, so proceed with caution. More than likely, your monitor should be OK anyway.
Right-click anywhere on the desktop where there are no icons
Click Properties
Click the Settings tab
Click Advanced
Ignore the General, Adapter, Monitor, Troubleshoot, and Color Management tabs. There should be one more tab that is specific to your video card. Click that tab.
Look at it, there should be a button that allows you to use an advanced control panel which should offer an option to set the vertical sync of your monitor.

I've heard that the problem is because of the ATI graphic adapter, but I'm looking for a solution too, maybe anyone of you know one

1 Display Properties
2 Settings
3 Advanced
4 Troubleshoot
5 Adjust the graphics accelerator down to low level, And it works!
