first of all I apologize for my english but I'm doing my best. After that, I have a problem running tie fighter: wothout audio it works perfectly but as I set the sound with the "setmuse" executable and I launch the game, it imediately gets back to the dos-promt window saying that:
I tried the adding-lines to config.sys and autoexec.bat way and setting the propreties as I want but I didn't get any result. I'm using windows98 SE and I got 128 MB ram + 64 MB Geforce4. thanks a lot to any usefull reply!

Right click the exe - select properties - hit the memory tab and set EMS to Auto - I assume that is what you mean when you say you tried the properties. Well, technically speaking that should work.
Your error looks as though you've either not got enough conventional or EMS memory. One of those or perhaps both. If you goto a command prompt window and type "mem" (without the quotes) you should get a memory summary. Would be nice if you could post that.
And also given we are in Win98 posting config.sys and autoexec would be nice..just to check the settings are correct in those

the propreties was already set on auto, I meant that I tried to increase them but it didn't work. Here is the promt about memory, I hope you'll understand even if it's in italian.
and here I copied and pasted the lines of config. sys and autoexec.bat:
config.sys
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE
device=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\display.sys con=(ega,,1)
Country=039,850,C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\country.sys
autoexec.bat
thanks a lot.

Mem says that you've got 558k conventional memory aviable, but Tie Fighter requires 572k to run, trie loading some drivers to the high memory by changing the Device command in config.sys to devicehigh an adding loadhigh (or shorter "lh") in front of the lines of autoexec.bat
should look like this in config.sys:
DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE
devicehigh=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\display.sys con=(ega,,1)
and like this in autoexec.bat:
lh keyb gr,,C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\keyboard.sys
mention that keyb gr means german keyboard, of course this will alter in your autoexec.bat
hope that helps, Anathos

i have x-wing which is essentialy the same game but with different content
i cant get enough ems running xp, the properties page doesnt work and when i tried using debug to view the ems allocation it told me it wasnt enabled
mem result:
655360 bytes total conventional memory
655360 bytes available to MS-DOS
599024 largest executable program size
1048576 bytes total contiguous extended memory
0 bytes available contiguous extended memory
941056 bytes available XMS memory
MS-DOS resident in High Memory Area
what the hell is contiguous memory
tie fighter in in xp not enough ems

archer,
ever figure out how to take care of that problem in xp, I'm having the same. and wtf is contigious memory. If its what it sounds like it seems odd that you could have like a meg of ems yet no contigious ems. I also have zero of this.
Thanks
