Betrayal At Krondor

I'm sure questions like this have been asked before but I'm new and stupid and do not know how to get DOS games to work too well. I'm trying to run Betrayal at Krondor on a 486 with Windows 95 and it keeps asking for virtual memory. I've fiddled around with the Sierra.ini files -- changing minimum requirements and such -- but it still is crashing. I'm also trying to get it running on a much newer PC running XP. That one doesn't give me the silly virtual memory question, and instead just loads up a blank screen (it does that weird 'whish'ing noise like when it changes to full screen and such) and promptly returns to Windows like nothing happened. Should I get a DOS emulator or something?

For XP yes, for 486 with 95 Krondor won't work, you need a minimum P133MHz.

So I'm guessing Command Prompt doesn't quite cut it as an emulator, does it?
Any suggestions for a n00b?

Better, but Windows is in background and takes memory.
