When I was young around 2000-2002, I used to play a PC game with a yellow robot, Mecha warrior style, it was a birds eye view from an angle, colored graphics looking like a strategy game. But I only controlled this robot, no other unites. No crosshair I think, shoots where it is facing. I think there was a minimap, and the main gun was machine gun I guess. Maybe I could fire missiles but I don't really remember. I remember missions where I had to defend a base, and attack a base. There where also explore or quest missions on the map. The most distinct thing I remember was the music playing Beverly hills cop as background music. Most maps where dessert maps with lots of yellow in them. Main menu had that robot as image.

Someone on Reddit suggested 'Outbound' from 1999; which is not (yet) fully documented on Mobygames.
