Dark game searching for bright prerendered keys?? [The Yeerk Pool]

This is like a feeling bubbling up, not sure what platform, but I get a sense that either it was first person or it didn't have a traditional recognizable character, I just remember a black background and a maze, where the keys were brightly colored and a sort of shadowed, pre-rendered 3D. There's not much else except I think I was good at it?
This was possibly around 1993-1997 or 1998. I had access to Windows 95, 98, DOS, Mac (whatever OS version was out around then), and probably rudimentary browser-based games. It could have been an educational game, could have been something I found on the internet, could have been on a friends' computer. I do know it was a computer game!
Any help would be super appreciated.

Possible candidates, maybe too basic, not sure if there are keys to find:
Asylum or
Asylum II.
Also a similar game for other platforms:
Hexan
At least there is something to build on; anything else to mention; any npc interaction or just 'escape the room' type maze?

Thanks for the assistance, it was definitely later than those. Specifically these keys were definitely 2D but prerendered in 3D.
Not a lot of interaction, I remember it being super bland and basic but definitely had a vibe. Ineffable lol

A pure maze game:
Escape the Labyrinth from 2018, way too late I know, but is this the type of gameplay and 1st person view your game had?

You know, the more I look at these the less I think it was 1st person. It feels more or less top down, but I don't remember what the character looked like.
Not a lot to go off of i know.

Hmm...full top-down is usually 2D, maybe it was isometric pseudo 3D or possibly a birds-eye view?
You usually have a view of your character or party with those views. And a maze would be difficult to make challenging if you get an overview.

I don't think I've heard of these books/characters - I was expecting a game with 'Morph' claymation in your link :-)
