Sci-fi flight combat simulator

Hey chaps

For years I've been trying to identify a game I used to play in the mid/late 90s at my Gran's house on PC. Annoyingly, I remember few details about the game, other than you used to fly around on different 'terrains' as opposed to in space - these were the levels. There were different boosts you could find and when you did, there was a very distinct sound effect.
I know this is probably the most vague description of a game ever, but if it rings a bell for anyone, I'd love to know!

Sounds like it could be Terminal Velocity or Fury3 or their sequel Hellbender.
