90s Fantasy Strategy Game

Hi all
Not sure if this one will be too easy as my recollection of this game is very limited. What I can remember is this (some of this may not be entirely accurate)

Played it in the 90s, on PC
2D graphics
Fantasy setting
Played in a top down view of a map
You move units around (I remember Wyverns, maybe Griffins) and I think the units were either cards or little tokens with strength values.
I think it was turn based

I know that's not a whole lot to go on, and that's why it's bugging me so much

Thanks

The thing that immediately spring to mind is HoMM:

(but that would be too easy to find)

No it's not that. Funnily enough, my brother just suggested that too.

Oh, there are actually quite a few fantasy turn-based games from the early 90s for IBM PC/DOS, including:
Master of Magic
Warlords and Warlords II
Fantasy General
Dominus
Celtic Tales
Realms

If not one of those, try remembering more details and compare to the above (e.g. did you build or develop towns or just hire units? did you design or train units etc.)

None of those unfortunately.

From the screenshots I feel like Fantasy General is the closest in gameplay, though it looked better graphically.
I don't remember any town building, more just fighting the units against each other, but that doesn't necessarily mean there wasn't any. I think it was more about just playing the units against each other and taking over the land.

Maybe something like Archon/Archon Ultra or Dark Legions?

By "looking better graphically", do you mean larger sprites than in Fantasy General, or better art style (or both)?

Also can you tell for certain if this was DOS or Windows?
