Realms of the Haunting - My graphics are on drugs

So here's the deal - I got this game on Steam, and it's basically pre-bundled and configured to work with Dosbox. The game kind of sucked, and a patch was released (unofficial patch? not sure). Anyway, apparently the patch also contained a hit of acid. Any idea how I can correct this? (Aside from reverting to the unpatched version)

On the serious side, maybe you have a backup?

I've got similar graphics palette who-knows-what problem with the Steam version of Quake 1, especially in fullscreen. Restarting, switching graphics modes, etc., sometimes clears it, and sometimes it just starts clean and I don't mess with it.

Or it could be a new bug and there'll be another patch. :)

Quick search doesn't turn up any know bug type discussions, and they even say it's a 100% software 3d engine, so no driver/directx funnyness.

Which version of dosbox does it ship with? Any chance updating or rolling back? It says it's supported as far back as .65: http://www.dosbox.com/comp_list.php?sho ... 1&letter=R
Different dosbox settings, switch from S3 default vga chip emulation to another one? (I think theres a tseng chip, IIRC.)

Always a rare possibility a bit got flipped somewhere and a reinstall will fix it, but that hasn't worked for me in ages. Maybe now you have a licence, you're free to download another backup from somewhere to see if it has the same problem?

's all I got. Good luck bug hunting! Hope it clears up.

(or if they are on acid on that side of the screen, maybe a double inverse works and you're supposed to take some on this side of the monitor? :P)

Yeah. I don't have any savegames, so I can just delete the game and re-download it from Steam, but then I also go back to the crappier controls.

I just noticed Quadko posted a link that showed the specs of the machine, and it turns out that DOSBox normally runs at 3000 cycles while the spec sets it extremely high at 15000. So maybe that is why your controls are not responsive? Just a thought to check out on your end since the person who tested it says they are using a GT graphics card as well. So extreme settings compared to your normal DOSBox defaults might have an effect/affect?

I think the problem may be the patch. The game works like a charm prior to applying the patch. I think the patch is just bunk. I posted a response in the Steam forum for the game as well. We shall see if anybody can upload a better one.

If the patch is unofficial, it would be logical to contact the author and ask them directly. Does it come with some kind of readme? Or was it auto-installed by Steam? What does it fix anyway?

Apparently there were three official versions of this game. 1 US version and 2 UK versions. Steam (and GOG) both install the older 1st UK version that is really limited in its options (no difficulty modes, no key binding options, no screen resolution options, etc). The patch was supposedly the 2nd UK version that implements all of these missing features. Unfortunately it's also bugging out my graphics. Other people had reported trouble with sound, but the sound was working okay for me.

Well an obvious possible cause for this could be the wrong palette I guess. Maybe the updated UK version used a different palette that is incompatible with game data files of the older version?

I am ashamed to admit that I have been unfaithful to the board. I didn't want to go overboard so I decided to update my game elsewhere. So there may be updated versions of my game laying around.

Sorry Tienkhoanguyen, but your game is in another castle. This thread was about Realms of the Haunted.
