I'm trying to remember the name of a classic PC (dos) war strategy game from middle of the 80's (same era as Sopwith 1), i seem to remember that the graphics were CGA.

In the game you started off with forts and you went round with different formations, there were Knights, Barbarians and Archers IIRC

The main part of the game was a map with loads of forts and roads on but when a fight took place it would zoom in to the battle so that you could see the individual men and you would decide whether to attack or retreat.

I can't remember what the name was called other than the fact that i had to type something like "stwar.bat" or "stwar.exe" to start it

I would be grateful i anyone could tell me the name of this game.

I'm not sure if this is what Wally meant, but I'd give Warlords a try. Warlords 2 came out in 1989, so the first one was probably from the era you're looking for. I don't remember it having CGA graphics, but you might still want to check it out. Its downloadable somewhere or other (or I can probably dig it up if you can't find it online).

The first Warlords came up in 1990 and had VGA graphics. I also have Warlords II deluxe and it's from 1992.
So I'm sure we can rule them out.

Maybe theese games were inspired by that old CGA game, but I can't say more.
