DOS Games Discussion

Hello everybody!

I'm looking for a game which I used to play when I was very young, so I don't have many details to give. It ran on DOS and it came in a diskette. I played it in my 486, between 1995 and 1996.

My searches until now were all in vain. I only know it was similar to Flashback in terms of gameplay and style: Platforming with fixed screens. It was themed in a jungle too, although in my memories it was darker than Flashback, and with a prehistoric feeling (but I don't remember about this point very well). Other thing I remember is of some kind of "pink muscular monsters", which would chase you if you enter the screen where they are. I was 4 or 5 at that time, and I remember of being afraid of those "pink men".

I don't know much more, this is all I know. I hope someone can help me with this :-)

I don't think so, the best things I can remember are the pink humanoid creatures and the jungle...

And it had, how can I say it... "normal graphics". Another World is almost entirely vectorial graphics.

Edit: It was similar to Bermuda Syndrome, although a little darker.

There's a game aptly called Prehistorik, which has some prehistoric/jungle backgrounds.

Side-scrolling platform games are a pretty large category, especially in the time frame you've specified, when this was one of the more prominent genres. Would be nice if you could remember more details, like what the main character looked like, or if (s)he could jump, run, climb, attack etc.

Bermuda Syndrome is both Flashback-like and takes place in the jungle but it's for Windows.

Also, take a look at Jill of the Jungle, Vinyl Goddess From Mars and Xargon, maybe also Realms of Chaos. If it's none of them, could you at least tell if the game you're looking for is similar or different?

Well, it isn't any of those games. It looked far more similar to bermuda syndrome or flashback than to any of your suggestions...

Other thing I remembered is that the main character was a "Indiana-Jone-esque" explorer (this I remember well) who needs to rescue his girl (but I'm not sure about this...).

If it helps, my computer was a 486DX with a dedicated 1MB video card, 8MB of ram, 8x CD-ROM drive, DOS 5 and Windows 3.1.

Hmm, there are jungle levels in Zorro but I sort of doubt it's what you're looking for.

Blackthorne can be considered to look somewhat Indiana Jones-ey, but the starting levels are mostly underground (take a look though!).

I don't know if it helps, but the game came in one or two diskettes, and the very first level was in that dark jungle.

I can't remember very well, but as far as I remember, there was some dinosaurs too.

To summarize:

- Came in 1 or 2 diskettes;
- The first level was a dark jungle;
- The game was a fixed-screen platformer, like Flashback;
- Probably it had dinosaurs (but the game isn't Prehistorik, which is too colorful);
- Some of the enemies were pink/red muscular humanoid monsters;
- The main character looked adventurous, with Indiana Jones feelings, and he had to rescue a girl;

Well, so far another game I wanted to mention is Alien Rampage which does start in a really dark jungle with prehistoric feeling; there are also rather muscular humanoids (not exactly pink though) which are in fact friendly NPCs that will move around and "chase" the player character (sometimes helping him out) but, and it's quite a huge "but" here - the protagonist is an alien with a certain similarities to the Predator character.

The overall look of the scenery is very similar, but the game I'm looking for had fixed screens, like Flashback and Abe's Oddysee. Also, the main character was an explorer.

Entity has dinosaurs and a sorta jungle environment in the beginning, but the main character is a female.

The platform games with fixed screens fall in some special category, or have a special name like "fixed platforming"? I'm pretty sure the game had fixed screens, and maybe if we look for fixed screens platformer we could find it :-)

Hmm, I have never heard of a special fixed screen category for games. I think platform game developers at that time preferred the opposite, namely dynamic side-scrolling, which is indeed a separate category at MobyGames.

That way, searching for platform games that don't have the "side-scrolling" tag (like Prince of Persia) should narrow the search down. The thing is, MobyGames is not all-encompassing som your game might be simply missing from the database.

Anyhoo, the settings in the Moby Game Browser would be as follows:
Game Browser : DOS [x] > Action [x] > Platform [x] > 3rd-Person Perspective [x] (215 games)

However, note that this list does not exclude side-scrolling games (I don't know if it is possible to mark a tag to be actually excluded). But the list isn't very large.

On another note, I begin to suspect that you're actually looking for some sort of an adventure game, and not a platform action game like Prince of Persia or Flashback.

I'm inclined to agree with you. I can't remember much, and by the things I remember, it looked like an platformer. I'll try to search for adventure games.

Did the screens have tiers like in Prince of Persia, Flashback, Zorro or Electro Man? If yes, that would probably be more indicative of a platform game.

On the other hand, there are quite a few adventure games with fixed screens and player controls that are similar to platform games (keyboard arrows for movement) - but there are usually no tiers and ledges to climb. An example would be Shadow of the Comet.
