Help with video problem. (Apache Longbow)

Post by DrakeMoray »

I am having a problem with a dos game called Janes Apache Longbow, here is the problem, I have recently installed Win 98, I wanted to do this because of the compatibility issues XP has with dos programs, I have successfully been able to use DosBox with Janes Apache Longbow but decided it would work and look better in Win 98, it does, the problem, works great with the default video driver which only gives me 256 colors and one resolution to choose from, after I install a driver for my video card "Radeon 7200 Series" the screen is all messed up showing multiple overlapping images of the same screen ( Tried to get a screen save of the image but couldn't ).

Any help would be appreciated.

As you have the Dos version you'd better run it real Dos.
Start menu -> shut down -> select 'restart in dosmode'

As you have a W98 PC you should look for the Windows version or even better Longbow 2.
Much better graphics/gameplay then the first Longbow.
Longbow 2 is a real b*tch to get it running in XP but runs fine in W98.
Catch is that if you have more then 360 MB RAM or you will have to tweak.

I would really like to load it in windows. Just for the heck of it I installed an older dos program called "Star Wars Xwing Collectors cd rom" it installed without a hitch except for sound, I managed to correct the sound hitch and it loaded with no problems and this program is 2 years older then Apache Longbow. I have thought of getting Longbow 2, but for now I would like to get the first version up and running in windows. any more suggestions?

All help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you read the Longbow readme? There is some info about ATI cards.
More specific the need to have "VESA 2.0 Compliant Driver for your video card."

From the readme:
* NOTE : ATI Video Cards are VESA 2.0 Compliant. But only with a third party
software such as UniVBE. Contact ATI or Scitech Software to find out when a
UniVBE driver will be available for ATI Video Cards.

* NOTE : UniVBE 5.1 and 5.1a will work with ATI video cards as an SVGA driver.
It does not impart VESA 2.0 compliance.
Maybe that's the problem?

BTW, that an older game runs without glitches has nothing to see with the problems you encounter with Longbow. You can't compare two completely different game engines.

[Edit]
Maybe *maybe* you could post about your problem @ http://vogons.zetafleet.com/index.php in the Windows sub, there are some real specialists over there, tip: you can't include too much details.
With a bit of luck someone knows a valid solution.
