X-Com: Apocalypse and Vista.

Post by Lucius NeoChoJin »

ok here goes... This is the closest I have seen to my problem, infact almost identical, so I'll post here and just pray that someone knows what to do.

SYS:
Vista
Laptop (ADVENT)
dualcore 1.6Ghz
(broken screen) running on a seperate monitor.

First I downloaded: X-COM: APOCALYPSE iso (.igm but same effectively)
I ran it on DAEMONTOOLS, but instantly kept getting the error
"This system does not support sufflscreen mode"
with ignore and cancel buttons.
ignore repeated message (3 times then closed automatic)

Someone informed me about DOSbox, so I installed that and after a lot of trial and error (assistance too) I managed to run it as an iso and installed (I had to repeat install after it crashed going to soundcard options, and left that alone and finished install)

so now I have the game installed in directory C:\GAMEISO\XAPOC
next I tried to run it though windows (XCOMAPOC.exe) but recieved the same fullscreen mode error.
so I went through DOSbox.

MOUNT c C:\ISOGAME\XAPOC
C:
DIR
XCOMAPOC

It brought up 2 lines about DOSbox then flickered to a blank window and freezes with just a flashing line.

I have been informed by someone with a better idea of DOSbox that it's a problem with VISTA's command prompt being unable to go fullscreen.

Please someone tell me there is a way to get around this without altering graphics drivers (which is one solution I have seen for a related problem) and without installing another OS (because I am too fearful of something going wrong and losing all the information I have gathered from the last 3 years owning the laptop)

PLEASE HELP ME 'O' WISE ONES.

No, not good enough under Vista, plain wrong.

Read and apply this.
That's where you begin, there is a 'Vista' how to for a reason.
You may delete all you've done till now, it's worthless.
Start over from scratch and install the game in dosbox.
And follow the Vista how to.

I did that, if you had read the post, I was UNABLE to install through vista, and so installed it through DOSbox (yes latest version 74) but even once it had installed, I couldn't get it to run through DOSbox.

Thanks for not reading my post properly, but still commenting.

It matters not anymore, I just bought the stupid thing from Steam instead, and they run DOSbox to get it to work (except it isn't happy with my graphics applied with 180 rotation. (screen screwed under shelf above besk)

SO there is probably a way to do it, but in the end it was easier to just buy it ready done.

No wonder.

That's where you went wrong:

Had you followed my advise, started over from scratch as I told you, you would be able to install/run the game in dosbox 0.74 on Vista.
The game runs fine in dosbox 0.74.
Your mounts were completely screwed up, that's all.

Ahwell, Steam isn't that bad. They simply apply the correct basic mount/install/run rules.

Enjoy the game.
