Looking for a game [=Magus]
Looking for a game [=Magus]
For the last 7-8 years I have been looking for an old game I played around 2000.
I think it was called Magus.
The search has been made harder because two games with similar names has popped up recently.
One flash and the other being a kids game.
Those are not the ones I´m looking for though.
This game was a 2D, top-down view, rogue/dungeon crawl similar, dos or maybe win game.
It could be either Free or shareware, I´m not entirely certain.
I think one started out choosing a class and name,
and you began in close proximity to a brown log cabin or house.
The most unique about it was that everything you could interact with (items, enemies, yourself, etc) was displayed on/as bricks.
If you saw an item for example, it would be on a square piece representation.
The bricks might have had dark brown borders and light brown background.
Though now that I think about it, those might be the standard colors,
and more advanced/better items could be in other colors.
The game world itself was huge, and had forests, lakes, rivers, grass fields, mountains, houses and even caverns in the mountains and some underground I think.
I also seem to remember that one had to gather better equipment (and level up I think?) in order to fight some dark lord or other menacing final boss,
though I never got that far.
It was very difficult, since you could not anticipate the enemies strength.
And finally, when you died, you came to a high-score list where you could measure your progress with your earlier tries.
I appreciate any answers, and if you have any glimmer of what it could be,
but something does not correspond accurately,
ask, and I shall do my best to clarify as much as possible.
Note that any info in here might be warped due to nostalgia and "over-written" memory. ,)

it sounds like you are after the game Maabus, but then again not entirely sure as I have never played it.

Wildcat was a publisher of CDs in the era most people didn't had internet, or that internet was too slow and costly to download bigger files (dial-up).
Internet in those days were mainly txt based BBS boards.
Other well known publishers were NightOwl, Tucows, Cybernet, Blackhawk, GigaGames, SimTel ......
They gathered files from the software devs/BBS boards and pubished them on floppy and CD, mostly shareware/freeware/tryware/fanmade stuffs.
It was much cheaper and more reliable to buy them floppies/CDs then to download larger files from BBS sites.
As most older persons that were interested and active on the early PC scene I have piles of those things around.

Ah, ok, thanks.
Tucows, the same as the site now, or unrelated?
I´m only half-trough my twenties, but I still love older games.
They often have much more satisfying stories to tell than newer graphics dependent games.
Not for lack of stories to tell, but often enough because they are bumped down by graphics and "user-friendliness".

Thank you very much.Anonymous wrote:I found it. Finally
If you were curious, here´s a link to a page with it.
The one named magus.zip
files.chatnfiles.com/Power-Dos-96/GAMES/ROLEPLAY/00_INDEX
I downloaded Magus and it's one of the games which I have been looking for a long time.
To these who don't know, Magus is a freeware RPG game developed by Ronny Wester who also programmed C-Dogs and Cyberdogs.
No problem, I know how you feel.Eugene Esterly III wrote: Thank you very much.

I had been looking for it for about 7-8 years.
Oh, so he was also the one who made Cyber&C dogs. Interesting.
Just have to add a fun fact.
As I mentioned earlier, 7-8 years, impossible to find etc.
And it turns out he is from the same country as me, Sweden.
Funny how that how goes really.
It works, start in:Janek wrote:magus witch you were talking about is the game that I was looking for, but the link dosen't work anymore, so I would be greatful if somebody could upload it or give me another link to magus
http://files.chatnfiles.com/
And then dig your way to the right sub, simply follow
Downloads > Power-Dos-96 > GAMES > ROLEPLAY
click ->
Happy digging.

Ronny Wester's Magus
Thanks for the link! It worked fine for me. I've been looking for it for a long time, too. Only thing is it won't run on my 64 bit but I have some older ones around here. Ronny also had another one, before Magus and C-Dogs, which had big colored circles that moved (turn based) around inside big tube like mazes. It was great. Anybody know where that one is or what it was called?
No turn-based colored circles I'm afraid
I am the author of Magus, Cyberdogs and C-Dogs, but I cannot recall making a game matching that description.
You may be thinking of the game called Gonk, which was essentially a remake of the Eldritch Cat game Projectyle (to the best of my recollection, not having played the original in a long time). While it did feature colorful circles, it was not turn-based - it was an arcade sports-game, sort of a three-player air-hockey thing. There were also tubes connecting the five different courts of the playing field.
Unfortunately I broke playability when I was tweaking the core mechanics and I never really got it to a state I was pleased with. It did not do the original justice I'm afraid.

Ahah! I just remembered this game the other day, I too used to play it waaaay back when I was a youngun. Me and a mate would "co op" it by controlling specific characters. And also C-Dogs was great fun, the level/campaign creation system was gold.
So I've just downloaded this and am gonna have a wee bit of nostalgia
