SPEEDY - An OLD Dos Game [Solved]
SPEEDY - An OLD Dos Game [Solved]
Hello I was wondering if anyone could help me find an old DOS game. It was a vertical scrolling game, like Raptor.
You controlled a small Red Sports car, and you would have to dodge walls and obstacles, otherwise the car would explode upon impact.
There were also ramps you could use to jump over walls, and a powerup that transforms your car into an aircraft, which you could use to fly over water areas.
The game scrolls by itself, and just like some of the Mario games, if you allowed the wall to push you into an obstacle, you would die.
At first the screen scrolls slow, then as you progress through the level, it would go and faster.
It's been an odd 9 or 10 years since I've played it, it came on a DOS Game Demo CD, with 50 other games.
I always thought it was called "SPEEDY", because I remembered the intro animation of a Red Car jumping over a hilly race track, and rock music playing in the background, in which they sang "Speedy" in the chorus.
Later I will upload a cheap drawing of what I remember it to look like, if anyone knows what game I am talking about, please let me know!

Do you mean Big Red Racing? sorry that's not the one, this game is set in Bird's Eye View.
"Speedy" isn't listed as a Dos Game in Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_MS-DOS_games
So I must be wrong about the name?

As this is the sharewareversion, and all necessary documents (File_id.diz-order.*-catalog.*) are included it's legit to share and post for download.
Otherwise it would have been deleted by me. (Me can be a real bitch, sometimes).
So: feel free to share-post-whatever you want.

ok cool, just one more question... do you know how to get the sound working under dosbox? i've tried all soundblaster combinations and the best i can get is static, this is why i wanted to send Speedy to dosbox, because isn't listed under their compatibility list atm.
gah just one problem after the other haha
long live speedy

Nope, and I suppose it's because it's a sharewareversion, the soundfiles have no extension. There are a lot of files in the \sound\subdir, but no extensions. Try maybe to add some extensions ....?
Gonna give it a look later, but not this week ......
[EDIT]
Said not this week, but ...
You need to set the SB type to SB1 in dosboxconfig:

You need to set the SB type to SB1 in dosboxconfig:
Code: Select all
[sblaster]
# sbtype -- Type of sblaster to emulate:none,sb1,sb2,sbpro1,sbpro2,sb16.
# sbbase,irq,dma,hdma -- The IO/IRQ/DMA/High DMA address of the soundblaster.
# mixer -- Allow the soundblaster mixer to modify the DOSBox mixer.
# oplmode -- Type of OPL emulation: auto,cms,opl2,dualopl2,opl3.
# On auto the mode is determined by sblaster type.
# All OPL modes are 'Adlib', except for CMS.
# oplrate -- Sample rate of OPL music emulation.
sbtype=sb1
sbbase=220
irq=7
dma=1
hdma=5
mixer=true
oplmode=auto
oplrate=22050

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=96Z88YP5

Thx those settings work fine, for some reason they don't work in D-Fend, so I have to run Speedy through Dosbox manually, no matter! I'm still happy I'm reunited with this classic.dosraider wrote:Nope, and I suppose it's because it's a sharewareversion, the soundfiles have no extension. This second has some more files then the previous one, several setup (FR-GE-NL) and such, but it all are win3.x installer, doesn't work in dosbox. And all it does is copying the files on HD, not suitable to run the games. In full Win3.X you still has that SB issue.
Better use the first one with 'SB1' setting.
(Or the second one without using setup)
For those that doesn't want to alter the original SB16 dosbox setting:
copy dosboxconfig to dosbox2.conf or so,
Edit the SB setting in dosbox2.conf to SB1,
create a new shortcut for dosbox (dosbox_s) and point to dosbox2.conf for playing speedy.
Something as:
x:\xx\DOSBox-0.72\dosbox.exe -conf x:\xx\dosbox2.conf
Alter x:\xx\ to match correctly your own paths.
That will start dosbox with SB1 enabled.

Bump of the millenium, by your powers combined, I am captain planet!
Hey guys, many years ago I asked about a good old game called Speedy, someone was nice enough to upload the shareware, but unfortunately I wasn't clever enough to have made a backup. I was hoping by a strike of luck that one of you may still have the file and could reupload it, I'm also interested in purchasing the retail version, in any shape or form.
