In firefox theres an option to "clear private data", it clears almost everything like temp files, cache and everything, plus you can go to "disk cleanup" in the start menu of windows. anything else you can do to wipe what youve been viewing? coz ive heard theres no real way to clear it untill youve overwrit the part of the hard drive it was saved to

When a file is deleted only the first bit (now yeah, kinda) is erased, the file itself remains on your HD t'll it is overwritten by another.

If you want to destroy a file so that it can't be recovered again you need so called DATA SHREDDERS, they overwrite ( X or 0 ) all the non-allocated space on the HD.

But, even then, some programs can recover them by reading the remaining magnetism.
That's why proffesional Data Shredders have an option to overwrite the deleted files 5-10 or even 20X to an extend they can't be recovered again.

So young people, don't think by simply deleting your darkest secrets your sins are erased.
Anyone who can work with a HEX editor can unveil them.

You may have nightmares now.

So, what did we learn today? dosraider has no common sense

I've once had some form of data shredder(can't remember the name tho') on "Paranoid" setting(20X) it took it 15 minutes to overwrite 10 MBs

And let's not forget registry entries, peeps!

Yeah, I'd be willing to bet that the microwave takes more damage than the data.

@ Larry Laffer: Dosraider is full of common sense. If you want your shit to gone, it needs to be over-written roughly 20 times. And naturally it takes forever to do. That's why you want to have your HDD on rails, and be sure to have a drill nearby so you can turn the platter into swiss cheese

The fact that data is so hard to completely destroy can be an advantage, as well. If you accidentally delete something, then the file's still there for you to recover. This has actually helped me out a few times! But I really can do whatever I want on the computer and get away with it because no one else really knows much about it.

Hmmm. Few things to say here.

One: Data Recovery.
Simple in theory. I ever-so-cleverly "ctrl X / ctrl V'd" my personal files (including school-work) onto my new hard drive from an external device. Now of course, the original location was then empty. When my hard drive took a hard dive...i lost the contents of the folder (and...well everything.) SOOO...we did a data recovery on the device and i managed to get some of the stuff back. From the results i got...I'd bet that one delete and revival wouldn't retrieve many pornographic images. The ratio of text documents to photos/videos that were able to be retrieved was 100:1. So...let me know;
a.) If this is what normally happens when retrieving documents.
and
2.) Why this happens (if it does.)

Now...this may be a little beyond your current scope...but hang in with me. Here's a quick tutorial for never getting caught with pornography stored on your computer:
* Do not look at pornography on your computer.

It really isn't that difficult.

Very, very short and incomplete:

1) You need some knowledge to retrieve deleted data from a flop/HD or ext drive. Some snoop programs can do that. If you don't know exactly what you're doing you only erase/destroy more stuff.
Keep in mind that:
The files are spread over several clusters, each file needs his refference to ALL those clusters, miss one and your file is borked. Not a big deal if the file is txt only, big deal if there are pics in that file.
Files are not stored in one long track on your HD, they are spreaded over every "zero'ed" cluster.
Bottom line here: You must find all the entries to locate the file's clusters.

2)When you want a successfull data recovery you need a boot flop or CD, with the necessary tools on them. Can be a dos or win bootthingy.
One of the major tools for data recovery is set the whole drive to READ ONLY.

As I said:Very, very short and incomplete, but it gives you an idea.
