I'd really like to play this game on my pc. I need some help.
First, I have no original CD so I'll find an image file along the way.
Now I'm trying to do the dosbox how_to for Vista and I might need some help on the step by step. For one, it's now Dosbox 0.74 rather than 0.73 which means menu items in start menu are different - there's no 'config' menu.
This forum's my only chance to play this game. So many chlidhood memories... ...help me guys!

Second post in Vista howto topic:
dosraider wrote:**UPDATE**
Dosbox 0.74 is released, that's the one you should have now.
Almost everything is the same, except you'll find the dosbox conf edit in 'options'.
http://www.dosbox.com/download.php?main=1 If for some reason you want to keep an older version of dosbox besides 0.74, no problem, they won't interfere with each other.
==> But do NOT use the ol'dosbox conf files with 0.74.
"Dosbox 0.74 options" will open dosbox conf file.

It's kinda obvious that if you want to play a certain game you need that game.
If you looking to download it best is to search for a valid CD image.
Be sure that on the CD image both MsDos and Win95 versions are on it, if it's a rip with only the Winversion it won't work in dosbox (neither in Vista).

I know, it's just that I'll need help with mounting and everything because I have no idea.
I've started dlding this: http:// SNIPPED
Hope it's a valid one(?), will post when dld is complete to ask for further instructions on what to do.
So, I've downloaded an ISO image and burned the cd. Now I'm trying to follow the steps you give on an earlier post in this thread:
dosraider wrote:
1-> You install dosbox 0.72 where it belongs, this is in c:\program files
2-> You open my computer, go to your C drive, create a new folder named: c:\dosgames\
3-> You stick your CD in the CD drive.
You open 'my computer' and you look what the drive letter is for the CDdrive.
4-> You run dosbox and you input: mount c c:\dosgames
Then you mount the CDdrive as D: in dosbox with: mount d x:\ -t cdrom
replace the x:\ by the real CDdrive letter under windows.
5-> in dosbox input: d:
install
When asked install the game on C:\Z in dosbox with the sound choices I gave you before.
To run the game once it's installed:
-> run dosbox and input:
mount c c:\dosgames
mount d x:\ -t cdrom
c:
cd z
z
I've gone through 1,2,3,4 then on 5 I type 'd: install' which gives 'illegal command: install'. I see that you have
d:
install
in different lines, does that make a difference and how can I type it that way?
dosraider wrote:type D: -->hit ENTER now
type install --> hit ENTER now
gives
illegal command:install
dosraider wrote:
BTW, as you have the ISO you don't need to burn the CD.
You can mount the ISO directly in dosbox as CDdrive D with 'imgmount'
Something as:
imgmount d "x:\path\name.iso" -t iso
It's even much better, those newer CDdrives do a lot of spin up / spin down, makes the game jerky.
I've already burned the cd and tried to mount it from the cd, should I just try to mount it directly anyway?
Will I replace 'mount d x:\ -t cdrom' in step 4 with 'imgmount d "x:\path\name.iso" -t iso'?
dosraider wrote:type D: -->hit ENTER now

Means something is wrong with your CD or with your mount.
No idea what precisely.
Screenshot of the files on the CD could help maybe.

Yes. Of course replace x:\path\ with real drive letter and eventually folder where ISO is stored.
wardrich wrote:The contrasts in personalities will deliver some SERIOUS lulz. I can't wait.
Had that one before, look at your files, this ain't the dosversion.
dosraider wrote:That file listing doesn't look at all as the original dosgame CD Z......
n those are typical windows file extensions, nothing dos like there.
Me thinks you have downloaded the Z and Z Expansion Kit, that's a win95 adaptation of Z http://www.mobygames.com/game/z-and-z-expansion-kit
Try to burn the CD and run that 'setup' directly in Windows.
If it's gonna run in Vista : no idea ..... sorry.
Can't you ask more info where you downloaded the game?
[Edit]
What you could try:
Mount again in dosbox, get to the D; prompt, do a cd z
dir/w
And look what you get, with a bit of luck the dosgame is there (or the 'install') , but I admit that's a long shot..... I simply don't know how they adapted the game to W95, sometimes they simply added a win installer on the original dosgame.
And read that 'readme' on the CD, maybe there is some more info in there, ya never know.
I simply don't know if it's possible to run the windows version in Vista, kinda doubt it.
What's in that 'Z' folder on the CD?
wardrich wrote:The contrasts in personalities will deliver some SERIOUS lulz. I can't wait.
VPC= Virtual PC.
It's a soft that creates a virtual PC on your PC and allows you to run older OSses in it.
Example:
Your Vista would be 'host' and in VPC you can run W98SE as 'guest' OS.
Works pretty good for older W9X games.
VPC is free for registred Windows users and a native MS Windows software.
You can download it dirtectly from MS VPC @ MS downloadcenter
Of course you'll need W98(SE) install CD, that's yours to find.
W95 works also, but is more troublesome, that's why I advise W98SE.
So, I've found an ISO than I know for a fact is valid. I couldn't mount the ISO directly so I burned a cd, then did the installation through DOSBox.
But now I can't do the mounting.
Drive C is already mounted as local directory C:\Users\(my username)\oldgames
Inside the oldgames folder I can see there's now a DOSGAMES folder created, with Z in it.
So I do mount d f:\ -t cdrom
gives
MSCDEX installed.
Drive D is mounted as CDRom f:\
