But that's the thing...
I would happily give it another activation key, but when i say i will, it tells me it's already activated?

Oh, leave it then, it will probably not affect your PC.
I'm not 100 % sure of it, but there were keygens that had that effect, Windows nagged about the activation but happily cotinued working normally.
Seems you have one of those, pretty poorly programmed hacks.
They worked for a thousand days or so, and then the nags began.
Do you have by any chance an OEM windows? I mean not the stand alone version? Kinda of a hacked brand a la Dell or PB, Acer?

And otherwise ..... you'll see what happens.
If we lose GAMER, we'll know why.

BTW, if you want a freeware OS, Ubuntu is really good, and ourdays you don't need to be a compy nerd to work with it.
Just a thought.

MP3 + 1 = MP4
:D

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP3
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG-4

:)

In short it gives:
The essential difference between MP3 and MPEG-4 is that the latter allows for the compression of video, while the former does not. Below are the glossary definitions.

MPEG-1, Layer 3: A compression technology, part of the MPEG specification that produces small, high-quality audio files by eliminating sound signals which the human ear cannot register. MP3 refers to the file format as well as the compression standard. To create an MP3 file, you need a ripper--a program that copies a song from a CD to your hard drive--and an encoder to convert the file to the MP3 format. To play the file, you need MP3 player hardware or software for your computer.

MPEG-4: Advanced compression scheme finalized in October 1998, designed to enable transmission and reception of high-quality audio and video over the Internet and next-generation mobile telephones; potentially enables mobile video phones, video email, and cordless video cameras. Two major versions are MPEG-4 Simple Profile for low-resolution digital video content, usually for distribution over the Internet, and MPEG-4 AVC (Advanced Video Coding), which offers faster and higher-quality compression than MPEG-2 for HDTV content.

errr...
not back. :(

computer says no.

i'm on my sister's laptop... purchasing a copy of vista / xp tomorrow...
question though;
is there a "non-destructive" install that lets me keep whatever is already on my hard drive??

i backed up all my stuff...
but i didn't back up all mum's stuff...

so, if i install windows again, will it erase everything??

:)

Depends if you have a seperate partition with your personal stuff (D, E ... whatever).
When you do a full new install XP/Vista you can refuse the format C:, then there is a chance you keep your personal folders.
But:
I would advise to backup your personal stuffs on C: and accept the format C:, will avoid you a lot of crap remaining on your C: .
If you don't have partitions you always still can create a D: and move personal stuff there before format C: .

Some more thoughts:
Vista uses a different NTFS then XP, it can work and will work on the XP-NTFS but it isn't advisable, better reformat with the Vista NTFS blablabla......

Insert plenty bla bla bla here...... pages full if you want but I'm too lazy.

Higly advised:
New install Xp or Vista: FORMAT YOUR C: , really. Don't let all that old crap on your system partition, and whilst you're installing, create a D: for your personal files.
Depending the size of your HD, C: 20-50 Gb XP, 30-60 Gb for Vista, the rest of your HD as D: (and USE that D: partition!)
Or something, whatever.

:shifty: How do i back up if i can't get into the "see the pretty things on the screen" part of using my computer??

i NEED mum's personal files... (which i assume are in C: )...

how do i do all this moving and changing??

If i buy a copy of Vista... Is there an option, when i boot from CD that says, "install and do not delete my stuff"?

 *is confused and stressed out.*

p.s. what are the chances of you being awake and responsive right when i need you? :shifty:

Pffff. it's possible, yes. Before doing the install you use a partition manager, shrink your current C: , move it to 'end' of HD, flag it as non-boot, make it logical D: , that frees enough space to create a new C: to use as install partition, use the new created C: for your new OS install.
The D: will automatically been usuable by the new OS.
Delete the useless stuff on the D: (OS, progs , whatever you don't need there) and only keep your mum's stuff and personal files there.

Other possibility:
Plug another HD in, make the new one MASTER and the old one SLAVE, install XP/Vista on the new one, after install use
start-config panel->compy management-> and make the old one D: logical.
*not sure that can work with XPsp1, forgotten, but certainly works with XPsp2/Vista*

If that all sounds as Chinese to you, ask a bit of help on the spot, don't tell me there are only n00bs around you. And if there are only n00bs: MOVE OUT.

Take your medication.
GAMER wrote:p.s. what are the chances of you being awake and responsive right when i need you? :shifty:
Slim, even non-existing. And certainly not sober this evening/night.

[Remark]
Even if those things I told you work, you should consider backing up the things you really don't wanna lose.
Also a possibility:
You could plug your HD in another XP/Vista pc as slave, will be auto set as D: (or first free logical letter) by that PC, backup your stuff and unplug the HD -> plug it again in yours-> format the HD and create a C: and D: on it, will avoid you a lot of those headaches in the future.
[/Remark]

But how do i use anything if i can't "use" my computer?

I don't get how i can make partitions and stuff when i can't even log in or anything?

I did contemplate the last option. The "plug your hard drive into another pc as a slave" path...But i thought there'd be an option with the windows install that it just replaces the system files and what not??
Then i could dump mum's files onto my external hard drive...
Then re-format after when i have everything saved?

I think i'll just have to go that route.
Coz i are noob.

Thanks though...

BOOTABLE CD with the partition manager on it, doesn't need a working OS on the PC.
As you're asking: forget that, no pun intended, but you will screw it up anyway if you don't know that stuff.

That's also an option, try a 'repair' instead of a full install, but it will depend how well your 'slightly' illegal XP has been cracked if that will work.
You can access eventually the repair function by booting from the XP install disk.
Will it work?->same remark as above.

There also exist bootable USB keys, repair CDs, bootable XP CDs especially for those purposes, a well known one is BART'S BOOT CD, but also it's pretty dangerous stuff if you never used that kind of programs.

Gah.

So best option for GAMER is the "attach hard drive to other computer" option?

I think i'll stick with that.

At least i know i won't screw that up.

Thanks heaps for your help.

I wish mum had just backed up all her stuff when i told her to.
