Although really, on a person's birthday, shouldn't that person buy gifts for their parents? Why do we give people awards for being born? It's not like they had anything to do with it ...

Well people could have always chosen to die at birth. And not doing so it's worthy of presents for as long as they live(at least once a year, that is).
