I've reworked the list yet again. The shareware clones and the open source liberated game build sections were dropped, and now board game implementations are a separate category.
Also, added the following titles:
Castle of the Winds, Ancient Domains of Mystery
o
Fame
Diplomacy
o
Ludus Regius
Panzer General II
o
OpenGeneral
RPG Maker
o
Advanced RPG Maker
o
Mokoi Gaming

The list now has a separate section for free content replacement projects that use either the original engine of the respective game, or a game engine remake that is capable of handling original game data.
Also, added the following:
Half-Life
Quake

Not much of an update but still:
Hexen: Beyond Heretic
Quake III: Arena

The first post seems to screw up spectacularly when I try to add more entries, but here's what suggestions I got in another forum recently:
Total Annihilation
Minecraft
Half-Life: Counterstrike
Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos

Hmmm, weird.
Added as 'quote' to first post.
Will look into this when I have some more time ....

Thanks! I am suspecting that some forum engines do not like it when there are lots of BBCode tags and/or URLs in a post.
Then again, it could be my browser screwing up.

Naaa, not your browser.
Seems it's some kind of protection filter(?) against repetitive posting of tags or char sequences ..... must be a spam(?) protection.
Dunno, ah well, we always can add 'quoted' updates as I did, something ....

Ahh, I didn't realize that placing text in quotes allows to circumvent this
(Initially I thought that this weird behaviour was the result of a very long post
per se, so adding quote tags would only make it even bigger.)

Maybe add Micropolis?
http://sourceforge.net/projects/micropolis.mirror/
http://code.google.com/p/micropolis/
Whilst still 'ongoing development' it's pretty good.
Personally I have some doubts as it now requires Java run-time, not every one wants Java on his PC ......

Lode Runner
dosraider, somehow I missed your post about
Micropolis, I guess it should be added since it's a direct port of the original SimCity code.

Sure. Here's one more:
Chip's Challenge
[Edit] I've added the new titles but even with the quotes trick everything is messed up. I guess the only way to solve this is to split the list into several posts.
[Edit2] Apparently the problem was in the excessive use of the [
list] tags all along. I removed them, everything seems to work fine.

That's how I like it, interesting swell filled topics whilst someone else do all the work ......

Seems OK now, apparently DGF's old phpBB board software has limits.....

I even added a DIY bullet symbol (the letter
o), check it out
The list actually looks better this way IMO, because the [
list] tags formatting in the forum engine leaves very large spaces between paragraphs for some reason.

I know of a few free remakes of classic dos games. I can link to their respective downloads if the mod is ok with it. but anyone can google them. These would be:
Kings Quest 1 / 2 Remakes
Quest for Glory Trial by Fire (QFG 2 Remake, same developer)
Panzer General Forever (PG2 remake)
Wing Commander Privateer Gemini Gold (Privateer 1 remake)
These are standalone games, they don't require the originals.

Do any of those have official permission from the copyright holders of respective franchises, or are those just fan remakes/sequels?
