I can confirm that Windows 2000 does in fact allow you to mute or adjust the volume of the PC speaker right through the volume control in your systray. (Yes, I am aware that ME is not the same as 2000. I am NOT running ME, I AM running 2000 pro.)
I had a screenshot, but windows 2000 pro MSPaint doesn't let you save out or bmp format.
