Oh yeah, add Butler University to that list... and I'm sure there are a couple more. We are one of the most educated states out there, but everyone moves away to the east/west when the graduate so we look bad on the government polls. =/

Goat: There are what? three colleges in BIKE RIDING distance of my house, I don't even want to count how many there are in the whole city. (I'm guessing 400 or so, given that the city has 3,000,000 people in it (4th largest in US) and each college can only hold about 1,000 students at a time and there are probably 400,000 college-age people around here)

TD: A definition, if you will: College is where the dumb people go... University is for the smart-asses.

Engineering is a fun field to go into (I am a chemical engineeer). You have to have good act/sat scores and better be real good at math to try it.

Here's my point of view:

Australia (Melbourne, anyway) doesn't seem to have any colleges. But of course I'm judging the term "college" by what I've seen in American movies, where you stay there in your "dormitory", and where everyone gets drunk and has sex with a different person every night...

Anyway, we may only have universities, but I guess they must accommodate people, since a large portion of Australian universities are Asian students that come direct from Asia.

Goat: Not exactly. A college grants you a Bachalors degree, while a University is for getting docterates. (Essentially. But there are several other differences) A university can give out Bachalors as well so it can be called a college but a college can never be called a university.

When it says higher learning, it doesnt mean that university is higher than normal collage, it is talking about comparing to secondary school.

So you all know, here is how it works: (In canada at least)

University - More books and theoretical things, such as:

Computer Programming
Engineering
English
Math
Law
Acoounting

Collage - More of a hands-on enviroment, such as:

Mechanic
Computer Repair
Clay Maker (?)

Thats how it works. i know this for a fact....

Thinking about it though, yeah ive seen loads of universities in american films, and ive heard of Yale and Harvard, so dont really know why i thought that! Maybe i dont know what im talking about!!

Im at an institute, probably pretty much the same as a college from the sounds of it, but im doing a degree. Really wish i had gone to a proper university because everyone does think institutes are for stupid people!

Frankly, before Thunderdog's post I wouldn't have imagined that ANYONE could not know there are Universities in the US.

And even abroad... John Nash, a professor at Princeton, won the Noble Mathimatics Award back in '94. How could anyone who is even remotely up to date on important events assume that Princeton doesn't exist?

I didnt assume they never existed, just never gave much thought into what they were called, because what americans say, canadians and english are all completely different (pants in england are underwear, trousers are what americans call pants, malls we call shopping centres) you see?

Methinks you have been deriving too much of your supposed "American Dictionary" from braindead celebrities in our shitty movies. Trust me, normal American English (at least where I live) is more or less identical to Brittish English with the exeption of some brittish slang.

Havent ever been to america, but would really like to go, probably to California, and wherever it was that a river runs through it was filmed, think it was Mississippi or Memphis?
Anyway, looked really pretty!

Getting back to the original topic, have decided im putting off deciding what job i want, and going to go travelling for a whiile instead. I cant wait!!!!

The Mississippi runs through several states, notably (to me) Minnesota and Mississippi. What movie are you talking about?

The movie was called "a River Runs Through It" With Brad Pitt and Aidan Quinn (i think). It was set in a really quiet town (was set in like 1930's or something though) with loads of woods and countryside and they went fly fishing!
