Quake.
First of all:
Open dosbox config and look under header [GUS]
set gus=false
Or you won't get sound with the shareware version that's on dosgames.com.
Now open quake106.zip and extract all files(4) to \dosgames\quake\
Run dosbox and input:
cd quake
install
Alter install dir from c:\quake_sw to c:\quake , let the installer run, takes some time, will run quake after install.
Go to 'options' and set in videomode the screen resolution to something that suits your monitor, for me it's 1024x768, but as quake is a greedy game it can be you will have to lower that to be able to play.
Use T to test a mode and D to set it as default.
Next time you wanna play:
cd quake
quake
Quake directly under Windows.
Now that you have the needed files google for "winquake", download wq100 .zip, unzip all files in your \dosgames\quake\ folder, and now you can run Quake directly in Windows without dosbox, should run much better.
Simply double click on winquake.exe.
With that one I can easily set my screen up to 1280x1024.
Wolf3d.
Unzip all files in 1wolf14.zip in \dosgames\w3d\
Run dosbox and:
cd w3d
install
Accept \wolf3d\ as directory and let the installer run.
The installer will leave you in \wolf3d\, input wolf3d to run the game.
Use the 'change view' option to set a max viewfield.
BTW, I usually play W3D with keyboard only.
Afterwards to run the game:
cd wolf3d
wolf3d

Quake:
You didn't set gus=false in dosboxconfig.
Not that it matters, runs better with winquake anyway.

http://winwolf3d.dugtrio17.com/ <-- Perhaps thato ne.
You can keep hanging there as long as you want, won't work in Vista.
WinWolf3D needs DX8 compatibility to work, and Vista does not have DX8 compability.
So it can't run in Vista.
It is possible to get DX8 compability in Vista but that would get us much too far to accomplish (needs DX8 DLLs and registery tweaks....).
So nope, WinWolf3d: forget it, dosbox it will be under Vista.
But maybe someday someone will update the program, or rewrite one for Vista.
But I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you.

If you got SoD where I think you got it:
Open the zip file, inside there is a RAR file (wolf3D 2.rar)
Double click inside 7Zip on wolf3D 2.rar, in the RAR file there is a folder wolf3D 2
Double click (still in 7zip) on the folder to open it, select ALL files in that folder and extract them to
\dosgames\sod\
Run dosbox and input:
cd sod
wolf3d
That's it.

Sue, if you only have the shareware version of Wolf 3D you will most likely only have the first 10 levels, however if you have the full version you get all 6 games. Note: Spear Of Destiny isn't actually a game of Wolf 3D, it's more or less a fan demo game, based upon Wolf 3D.
I thought you might would like to know that.

Not 100% correct what you say AdamN.
SoD was also developed by idSoftware and commercially released, not a fan made sequel.
Released as shareware and full game, same as W3D.
True is that SoD and W3D uses 'almost' the same game engine.
'Almost', because if you try it: SoD won't run on the original wolf3d.exe.

I always thought it was a fanbase game hence why it is not the sequel to Wolfenstein 3D.
