Jane's....

And of course the excellent:

All more recent WWII air combat games I've tried sux big, really.
Mostly based on console games, view behind plane, arcade hall stuff.
For crying out loud.
As for WWI combat flight sims: there isn't one I fully liked.
Another one that you should try once isn't WWI/WWII: corncob3D, not situated in one of the WW but in an imaginairy world, against invading aliens.
You fly a corsair. Interesting game because of some extra elements, you can land and plant bombs if needed, you must manage your planes, you have limited supplies.... try it out. Pretty hard to fly and survive.

1942 TPAW is MicroProse, thus ESA protected, but you can find it on some AW sites.
EAW is too recent, look in the bargain bins.
MS CFS , no need to say it's protected, look also in the bargain bins.
Also ESA protected, but findable:
F-14 Fleet Defender (pretty good, but not very tactical and not WW related of course)
Good, but not so good as 1942:
Pacific Strike, downloadable @HotUs:

Corncob3D is on our (ahem ... emmzee's) site.

*Update*
Almost forgot, but EAW has an active modding community.
You can completely remod EAW to WWI.
