Old Fantasy Game (Good Luck)
Old Fantasy Game (Good Luck)
I've been searching for a certain old game for quite some time but to no avail. Hopefully you will be able to help me. I don't have much of a description to run on since it has been awhile since I've seen/played this. Good luck.
I played the game as a demo when I was a little younger (perhaps 98 or 99? Not sure). I'm fairly certain it was a fantasy strategy game based around empires (think Fantasy Empires) with several different races (dwarves, elves and humans are the ones that I can remember. I think the undead may have been a race too, I'm not sure) that you could play as (based on the empire you chose to play as. Again, it was a demo I played). Each state/county/thing would have a leader that had special powers (I think). I remember one leader that you could choose was a magic-user who could transmute something into gold (can't remember it was now).
I also remember that the overland map looked really detailed. I think it showed if you had units/heros in a land and what type.
As it was a demo though, it didn't let you do everything. You could hire/recruit heros and group them with other heros and send them on quests to gain items or raise their level. It didn't actually let you do this in the demo, but instead just told you about it (so I'm not sure about details).
Battles were another thing it wouldn't let you do but I think it mentioned they were done in real-time.
Was there some giant overlord guy you were trying to unite the land against? Maybe. I could be confusing it with another game though.
Spiders. I think I remember giant spiders. Again though, I could be wrong.
Maybe it was never completed. I only remember playing the demo and never hearing about the game afterwards (no internet back then, very few games in my area). I can't even remember what the demo was packaged with (though I will do another search for the disc).
If you need a better description of something, ask and I'll try to provide. I've typed up just about everything I can remember about it though.
Good luck!

Uhm. I'm going to go with the obvious...
Was it StarCraft?
The first thing that came to mind was actually Elder Scrolls : Oblivion... but i doubt that's it. -shrug-

I think it fits the description pretty well. Or not.

Woot? Not Lords of Magic? I was so sure about that...
The thing I have trouble fitting into anything is the real-time battles. They just don't ring any bells (other than Lords).
Unless of course the whole game was RTS, which I somehow understood was not the case here. If it was, I'd try either Kohan or Total Annihilation: Kingdoms.

Master of Magic still has my vote for the best fantasy strategy game ever though.

<strike>Nope, it isn't any of the ones mentioned (I've played them all aside from the last two pure RTS games mentioned).
I did some searching on Mobygames (first time I've heard of this site) and I think it might have been one of the Heroes Chronicles games, likely Clash of the Dragons (the giant spider as the last boss rings a bell). The overhead map/play field is different from what I remember and from what I can tell, you can't really choose which state you play as, but it does seem like a likely candidate (and I haven't played it, so don't know for sure one way or the other).
I'm going to try to check out the HC games, but if anyone has any other suggestions, feel free to... suggest.
Thanks!</strike>

In that case, let me present you with one of my all-time favorites (after MoM, of course):
