Operation: Inner Space can't start

Post by ReploidArmada »

OS: XP Pro
Graphics: nVidia Gforce FX 5200

I can run the demo just fine, but for some reason, when I install the CD version, I get the following error:

"Drive X:\ is not a CD drive. Please reinstall from Inner Space CD to fix."

Drive X is whereever I installed from, whether it be a virtual drive or the hardware. I tried running the executable through Program Compatibility Wizard multiple times, but none seemed to fix this error.

I even tried a different release of the CD software, but to no avail.

Does anyone have any insight into my dilemma?

Did you uninstall completely the demo? And run a regcleaner afterwards?
Can be it still sees it as demo.

Or it can be it's not compatibel with modern hardware.
Isn't that a Win3 game?
You can always install W3 in dosbox, and give that a go.
Here's a howto:

Well, it shouldn't be a compatibility error, I tried to install the full version on the exact machine that ran the demo perfectly. I'm not sure why it wouldn't be compatible while the demo was.

I'll try your suggestion of nuking it from sp... no wait, that wasn't it, it was to clean the registry. That's what it was, right? :P

I'll be back!

EDIT: I can't seem to find anything in the registry that relates to SDi or Inner Space. I tried Registry Mechanic but nothing changed. The CD install still recognized that there were registry values from a previous install. I'm not sure whether that had/has any effect on my issue.

I'll try to install O:IS through Win 3.x in DOSBox.

The demo and the full game aren't the same.
So your statement 'it runs the demo it must run the full game' isn't true.

It still doesn't seem to me like there would be enough of a difference between the demo and full versions to cause a compatibility error. :/

Now , the demo works in Dosbox0.72/Win3.11

Hmmmmm, lost a wing, but killed the infected icon.

Also it learned me that the demo installs a 'INSPACE.INI' in c:\windows\
Locate this one, delete it, and try again the full game in XP.

*Edit
Forgot to mention:
If you want W3 in dosbox to be able to see your CD, mount it BEFORE you launch W3.
-> Advisable for W3 games is to mount your CD as D: ,not always needed, but ya never knows.......
