There's this old game I'm trying to remember. Trouble is, my memory of it's very hazy, and it shares aspects of many other games. I've tried Yahoo! Answers, GameSpot forums, a long, hard look on MobyGames, Retro Gamer Forum, but still havn't found it. Here's all I can remember about it:
The story was set less than 500 years in the future, soon after humans acquired the ability to leave the solar system and travel to other star systems. They find only two alien races, both below humans who are sentient but havn't acquired space travel. Humans give the aliens their technology because they feel sorry for them. However, several years later, after both alien races had expanded and colonized several solar systems of their own, they ally and declare war on the humans.
As for the game play, it had some colors, notably blue, and could be played on the PC. It was an old game, probably made in the early-to-mid 90s. The game was in top-down perspective, played only on a screen that displayed various simple icons of various space ships, icons small enough that many dozens could fit end to end on the screen. You were able to direct where your own ships should move or fire through a system of orders, secting the order then clicking where it should go. Each ship had a set number of power units, and you were able to divert power to various systems, such as weapons and engines. The game only had one mode of play, and operated on only the tactical level. You were never able to build ships or train soldiers like in 4X games. Instead, you were given different scenarios to select, which gave you a short little background story of what the current conflict is and what you had to do to win. You were not planets, though you could control starbases which were like large, well-defended, stationary ships, and you move off-screen or jump to other star systems in-game. You were not able to directly controll with number keys or the space bar like in some action games, and battles tended to take place in deep space, devoid of planets, stars, or other gravity wells, and the ships would travel in a straight line to where you wanted them to go.
That's all I can definatively remember, though there are some things I can sort of remember, but they're not strong enough in my memory to definatively say, and I fear they'll just lead people to the wrong game.
I can definatively tell you it's not not Star Control, Supremacy/Overlord, Masters of Orion, Space Quest, Space Invaders, or Star Legion, all the answers I've gotten so far.
If you can tell me the name of this old game, you'll have my thanks.
