looking for name of castle/quest game

The game started out with choosing your character, who could be one of numerous "species" (human, elf, etc.)
the main part of the game centered around a town and castle within walls, where you could pick locks to enter peoples houses to steal tings, and if you were caught you could get sent to a type of gladitorial ring. there were also quests that you could be sent on(the one I remember involved a giant squid).

I think the game was somehow related to the dragon lance series, or maybe i just got them all together. Please help!

About when did this game come out? And what type of graphics did it have?
