How do you make DOS games work on XP?

I tried playing Willy Beamish on my computer and every time I try, the screen either freezes, flashes, or the characters go away... I've tried a million times and it hasn't worked!! :Angry:

Is there any settings I could change to make the game run smoothly on Windows XP??

Like I posted before: Use DosBox, it's a program that runs old dos games properly by emulation.
