Dos Games in Windows 2000

Post by mjk1998 »

I just switched my operating system on my computer from win 98 to win 2000 pro. I can't seem to get some of my old dos games to work such as Ulitma Underworld and Stunts. I went into the properties box on Ulitma Underworld.exe and made sure that the EMS memory was turned on but it still does not load it just says EMS allocated when I run the program then stops. I've tried what some people have suggested for Win XP but it doesn't seem to work for me. If anybody has any idea of how to get Ultima Underworld running I would be very very pleased. thanks!!!

Cannot change EMS (Extended Memory)

I am running with millenium and when I right click on the DOS game .exe and go to property, the field EMS is empty in the memory tab ! There is nothing to set there. Does anybody know how to change EMS ?

mjk1998-

I think you'll find that you either have to use a boot disk or else dual boot with Windows 98. Windows 2000 is even less capable than Windows XP when it comes to DOS games compatibility. Sorry. :(

Laurent-

You won't be able to change the settings for the executable (.exe) itself. Right-click it and select "Create shortcut". Then change the settings for the shortcut and run that instead.

I've downloaded Cosmo Cosmic Adventure, unpacked the installation files, but they are not working! It shows me the message the file will work neither under Windows nor under MS-DOS. What's wrong with it??? I have Windows 2000. Maybe there's some place I could get whole unpacked game or something...

Windows 2000 does NOT support dos, although, there is a way to get some dos games to work on windows 2000 such as Viper Racing(published and developed by Sierra). I know that as a fact for I have got it to work on Win 2k and it is a dos based game. If you have viper racing and you are trying to get it to work on win 2k, then go to http://www.members.shaw.ca/nhra/ at that site you can get a beta patch, and instructions on how to get it to work. to get it to work without the cd, go under "properties" on a shortcut to the Viper Racing.exe, and go to "shortcut". where it says "target", after the link(ie: "C:\Viper Racing\Viper Racing.exe") put a space, then "-nocanary".

and if ANYONE has a way to get the game "Sorry!" to work on win 2k, it would be appreciated if you would tell me.
