How about the main character from 'wereldspel' (worldplay?), written by some Polish guy. It's about a kid that gets stuck in a computer game, or more a virtual thingamabob. Games!
Well thanks to my funky hair do, my mate dods used to call me Frodo so I guess since I’ve got the hair that might not be such a bad idea. Other then that maybe the main character out of Red City. Can’t remember his name though.

Gotta be gandalf.
A demi-god with amazing (and subtle) magic powers. Always having to repress his powers around the common folk, but being a super immortal when noone is around: an ambasador to all people of the world, and a mandate to act however you wish to preserve peace.

There's at least four ... #1 is "Knee-Deep in the Dead" and #4 is "Endgame". I have not read any of these, but they surprisingly received some good reviews on Amazon. There's also that book about id Software & the making of DOOM (and their other games) called "Masters of Doom : How Two Guys Created an Empire and Transformed Pop Culture".
