cant get old software to play on windows XP

Im having trouble trying to get this software to play in my computer. I dont know anything about computers. I recieve an error message saying [C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'close' to terminate the application.] Can anyone please give me step to step simple instructions to fix this problem??????
