DOS-games with Voodoo 3 3000 on a TV

Post by Guest »

Hi!

I have recently set up my old computer, an AMD K6II-450Mhz, 192MB, on an ASUS P5A MoBo, with a Voodoo 3 3000 graphics card. I have this connected to my TV ( Philips 28" 4:3 2xscart ) via a s-video cable.

At first I tried win98SE and got my tv-out to work in windows without much fuss, BUT everytime I started a DOS-program ( from windows ) the picture got black & white.

Now I have installed WinXP on the computer and the windows games runs much smoother and more stable, same problem with dos-games though, they are still in black & white.

When I run the games with a regular computer monitor, i do not have the same problem.

I have tried DOSBox and the games show color, but the computer is too slow to emulate anything better than a 386

I have searched for an answer for awhile and found some site which claimed dos-tv-voodoo 3 was impossible. Anyone who knows if it is? I mean very few things are actually impossible

I am open for suggestions! Thanks in advance!

"AMD K6II-450Mhz, 192MB" XP ? pffff, poor HD, must be swapping as hell.

But to respond on your question:
The voodoo has indeed a bad w98/dos/tv reputation, i have known someone who using somekind of bétadrivers was able to get color in w98/dos but they coudn't load high and were extremely unstable, as far as i know those drivers weren't developed further and abandoned as worthless.

A TV and a monitor are maybe look-a-likes, but they aren't, they use diffrent video systems.

No direct solution for your problem, except a system upgrade.....

To be honest with you: i am even curious if you even can emulate a 386/24 through dosbox with your sysspecs without making your cpu working as crazy....watch your temp !!!!!!

Thanks for you answer!

I have not yet checked my comps temp, but I will :) Thanks!
The main reason I switched to XP is that I am experiencing so much more stability with regular windows games. BUT I have done everything to ease the pressure on it also, no xp-"extras" enabled so to speak. So it should be ok I think.
I have tried dosbox as i said, but since it really can't emulate a "good" computer I will hardly be using dosbox at all, perhaps just for a game of "sopwith". :) "Tankkk" ( a great game, 2-3 players ) is also a possibility, but it does not run that smooth, just barely.

Well, I might give dos-color up then... I have another graphics card GF2 MX 440 I think with tv-out, but that one really hates my mobo.

Anyway, thanks again!

You were right, not a 386... probably more of an 286 - Just checked dosbox FAQ.
