I have just purchased the Game Return To Zork.
It is a very old game and i am having problems running it on xp. the game loads fine and plays but when i move screen to screen it says there is missing files and the game wont play the movie sceens and the intro to the game etc. any ideas?
missing files
Make a folder on the root of the C drive and call it ZORK. Put the entire game there.
In the Command Prompt, type SUBST A: C:\ZORK and press Enter.
Type A: and press Enter
Type the name of the game's executable then press Enter. (if it is ZORK then type ZORK and press Enter, if not, use the DIR command and look for files that have extensions of either EXE, COM, or BAT).
Hope that helps.

Sure, that's OK.
If there was an installation routine, perhaps it screwed up along the way. Try re-installing the game (if there is an install routine).
Or if it's a DOS-based install routine, we would need a way to install it in pure DOS, then copy the already-installed game to Windows XP, then running it from there as there would be a complete set of files.
Did you buy it on a floppy disk or a CD? If so, perhaps the disk or CD might be faulty, which may explain the missing files (or if the files are there, they may be corrupt).

Return to Zork is as far as I know a pure dosgame.
Original sold on floppy.
I suppose you d'better give dosbox a try to run it on XP.
Yo can mount your flopdrive in dosbox as :
mount a a:/<enter>
If that don't works copy the whole archive to a tempfolder and mount this as a drive:
mount a x:/tempdir<enter>
Run the install from there.
Don't forget to mount a c in dosbox! my advise is to always use a separate dosgames folder:
c:\games and mount this as c
mount c c:/games<enter>
That works with many of my own old-dos games floppys.
If anything fails:

You can get a (rip?) there.
Good luck........
