I remember the game was called gladiator and when you play you have a selction to hire as many troops as money can buy. You can play as a mage, thief, cleric, gladiator and thats all i can rememeber. your characters can level up and they can learn new abilities(for example cleric can raise dead mages can teleport and soldiers can use some kind o boomerang), also for every battle you win you get as much cash as you picked up.( there like little gold bars that you can pick up, also silver)
i do rememer some of the enimes where skeletons and there is one big boss that give you major exp. there are i think 52 levels with a portal in every level allowing you to advance. its really cool.
