I'm huge fan of doom!
I really like to make Games about Doom.
so far i've made 3 games and i'd like you to try:
http://gmshow.gm-school.com/index.php?c ... the%20Dead < Doom 2D (Version i made. sucky AI but really fun! + cheats!)
http://www.freewebs.com/skdoom/index.htm < Doom Gates Of Hell. Doom in Golden Axe style! You can try here too: http://www.rocketsoft.gm-school.uni.cc/uploads/GOH.zip
http://gmuploader.uni.cc/main/download_ ... p?uid=1477 < Doom 2D 2 players COOp with the Strife Guy
Now i'm working on "Doom: The Battle For Mars!" Which is RTS like RedAlert (Alpha Test: http://forums.gamemaker.nl/index.php?showtopic=117903). I'll be happy to ear some feedback...

You know? These things are pretty cool. To an extent of course. I still think the original DOOM2D beats them all, and I'd prefer people to design levels for that, instead of making clone after clone, but I guess that will never happen.
The platform game is nice, although the control could be more responsive, I guess, and the AI of the monsters is pretty dumb, i.e. it appears that they are just following predefined routes. Of course, on the other hand, it makes it not as insanely hard as DOOM2D is.
The Golden Axe version is also neat. Original, I'd say. Doesn't look too good and perhaps a tad too hard, but has potential allright.
I didn't try the coop one and the RTS one.
Overall, I'm pleased. Of course that there's still a lot of work to be done before these games will feel polished, like you'd expect from a game, but I think you're in the right direction.
However, the one problem might be is that you are testing many different game styles to convert DOOM to, and in the end you may have a lot of semi-complete games, but none which is really complete.
Personally, I think that the coolest thing is the Golden-Axe style shoot-em-up. With more work and playtesting it could be really cool.

The doom2d is nice, and funny indeed.
Sometimes it is a relief finding a distracting game after all the overflow of doom3/half-life overwhelming "look what we can make".
But i have to agree with dr_st, with your capacities, why not make nice levels for the original?
And the AI is indeed really dumb.....improve that and the game would be more interesting.
