The Game Movie

Post by Jorrit »

Some days ago I received a new movie from Steve Chris. It's nice :) This time he converted the images to Flash and added music and sound effects.

Start The Game Movie (9.36 MB - broadband recommended)

Please let Steve know what you think of it.

Other movies from Steve Chris:
- The Pack Attack
- Being Super Mario for a Week
- The day Dave came out to play
- Dangerous Dave

Still no reply? How sad :( ... I wonder how many people have downloaded the Movie :shame:

Anywayz Jorrit, thanx for painstackingly posting links to my work here, moreover upload my crap into your site's precious space. I will always remember the nice things you've done for me and for helping me out.

Ooh and I was wondering if you could start a new section for all my cartoons in your site. It could be fun! Remember when John Romero visited these forums when that Dave animation was released? Who KNOWS what more exciting stuff will happen if you have my cartoons in the site as well!! I know I'm hardly worthy of asking you this, but it's just something to think about really. I'll work VERY hard to make frequent updates if you agree to this.

Oh and the rest of you are welcome to shed your thoughts about this too...

Its good steve. YOu strike again :)

I however do suggest using the power of flash for smoother animation.

If you do need help i can help you get the smoothness out.

Its quite simple and will save you about 20% of the time used.

Motion Tweening is what all this is about.

Thanks again for the effort.

NB: Did John Romero visit these forums?? I cant remember :)

Hi Wally! Thanx for watching! Yeah I know I'm very new to Flash. Right now I'm still using my old softwares Animation Shop and paint to do the animation and the drawings. The reason I still use paint is so that the cute characters still look the same as the old GIFS.

I'd be glad to get any lessons and pointers from you or anyone here (as long as they're free heh heh)

Yeah Romero DID visit the forums when one of his games Dave was in a cartoon of mine. He came to the forums through a link provided from his forum.

He didn't post his comments here though, he posted his comments in his site...

I watched it, just didn't reply.

Anyways, it's pretty funny in most parts. :) I especially like how you send that death squad after the guy on the phone, absolutely brillient!

My main complaint is it all seems just a little... rough. Maybe it's because of the length, but the quality just doesn't seem up to par. Voice acting too, but I can understand that... good vocals are the hardest thing to get right. Still, maybe it would help to script the episode? Don't mind me...

Overall, it was an excellent film. Keep them coming! =)

(BTW, do you get G4/TechTV in India? I'm sure they'd really love a clip like that ;))

Hi glad you liked it. Yeah the Death squad thing is also one of my favorite parts. The voice acting wasn't all too great because I personally had to do ALL the voices myself becoz i couldn't find any actors and everybody here thinks I'm crazy anyway. I know the movie was rough cuz as I said I'm very new to Flash. Once I get used to it my movies will look better.

What exactly is this G4/TechTV? I don't think we get it here :(

It's a satellite TV channel in GB and North America. (A merger of two separate ones, I believe, though I'm not sure) Essentially, it's a somewhat experimental channel that merges TV and the internet, computers. Actually, for the last year or so it's become much more popular, and is now very mainstream looking, so I don't watch it. But when I first got into it back around 2000 there were only a couple thousand viewers so it had a very interactive feel.

For instance, you could call into the various shows (the Screen Savers being the "main" one), or talk to the producers and cast members online, or send them e-mails with various recommendations they'd incorporate into future episodes. (Most of the employees of the channel are also bloggers, so you can read and comment on their lives, etc.) It also has an extensive website where you can join on-show multiplayer games, watch the shows from your computer, chat in IRC rooms, message boards, webcams, etc.

Now that it's more popular, ratings is a bigger issue so it's more streamlined and professional. Not that that's necessarily bad... TV people have to make money too, it's just not as fun to watch.

Post by Santhosh CHRiS »

All I use is a little bit of paint (to draw the characters) a little bit of Animation Shop (for the animation part) and just a whee touch of Flash (for the itty bitty sounds) and ofcourse the main ingrediant sprinkle it with a WHOLE of lot of CRAP!

If yea see the movie plz be sure to REPLY

Post by Santhosh CHRiS »

Hey there, um... i'd really like it if everybody who sees this movie replies so I can know what they think. It's already been really disappointing that Jorrit completely ignored my silly request of having these movies on his site, and now this (sigh) I don't even why I'm making these movies anymore. It seems pointless and not really getting me anywhere. Sure you might say it's good practise, but that really doesn't motivate me enough. Has even ONE person from here even BOTHERED to check out my website for more of my work? Has anyone from here joined my group??! Aren't you guys curious about the more general comics I can do, or is it just Games games games here??! Maybe I'm at the wrong place. If so kindly direct me in the right and I will go...

I really don't understand what else a guy has to do to get some people to visit his site. If people can't even take a few seconds to reply to a movie that took me many hours of hard to work to make well it's just very very very disappointing... maybe I should go somewhere else i dunno... So far the only person that's really been helpful was Jorrit, and even he turned me down by completely ignoring my Email...

So anywayz, if you pity me enough please do check out my groups

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/laughinggames

Don't worry it's not spammed or full of crap (as may be the reasons you didn't check it out before). It's a good place. I'm a good guy I don't like to force people to do anything they don't want to, but lately it's just been disappointing that's all. The reason I'm typing like this is because I am feeling really really miserable right now and even contemplating suicide.
I pretty much have no life, no girl, no looks, no shit. Cartooning is pretty much all i have left, and these forums are pretty much the only place that fills me up with some hope for the future.

It really is impressive to have my cartoons topped in all search engines Google, Yahoo etc. but what's the point of it all that if you can't really have some people to say nice things about them I wonder?

I've tried very very very hard for 3 years to make some money from my site to help build myself a future in this, but so far failure has been my only friend. I don't know why? People say I'm funny, hell I've got dozens of emails saying that I'm a genius, then why why why can't I get anywhere from this? What am I doing wrong??!

I hope that you'll never hear from me and my stupid cheeky cartoons again. I hope I never have to share my dark world to anyone else. I live in India. There's not much hope here no matter how talented you are. That's why I turn to the internet for everything, but so far it's only turned on me.

Good Bye!

P.S.

Oh and Jorrit, I'll understand if you say no about my cartoons in your site. It's the way you've ignored it that hurts me the most. A simple Yes or No would've really cheered me up.

Sorry that I didn't reply to your e-mail yet - I was busy with other tasks during these two weeks and I didn't know you was so eager to see my answer.

I think the main problem regarding adding your movies to the website is that they are too big; it takes too long to load. That's why I suggested to you to experiment with vector images. These kind of graphics are a very important point of Flash.

If you put in the same creative ideas and humorous scenes related to DOS games, I will add your movie to the website to see what the responses of the visitors are. It's just a suggestion; I am in no way asking you to recreate the movies in a different format. Take care.

Steve, dont get down! I have seen your video and you obviously put a lot of time and effort into it. It is always the promotion side of things that is depressing! I know the feeling, you have created something that you want the whole world to see, but you cannot reach them or they simply disregard it! Its horrible :( But aslong as you enjoy what you are doing you stick at it! No need for suicide. When I make things, I go by the rule that if at least 1 person has found enjoyment in something I do then it is worthwhile. You cannot expect packed audiences straight away :) Keep working...

Besides, I have just seen the hit counter on your website. I dont think you have anything to worry about.

Arrrr... as an aspiring movie director (I've actually spent the past 5 months working as the director and screenwriter of a low budget film) I feel your pain, Steve. :( Maybe 50 people will ever see my creative genius, a little more if it wins anything at the film fest.

However, I have watched every movie you've made and browsed over your group before, though I've never really had the time to register and didn't think I could contribute anything meaningful , anyway.

If it makes you feel any better though, I registered now and I'll be sending you an e-mail soon! :)

(And I really think you have more admirers than you know.)

Hi guys I really appreciate you cheering me up here :) At first I thought no one would reply to it but hey you guys really do care!! (ok let's not over do it heh heh)

And WOW DB, I never realised you were a movie director yourself! You really ought to post some of your work here sometime!

Thanx again!

LOL: everyone has their ways of expressing themselves creatively and most of the time it will be totally ignored by others :D

No matter how much work you put in, there is very little chance of 'breaking out', actually being recognised for what you've done. I understand you were upset when you made your big post, but it sounded like you had your priorities messed up. Don't write your movies to impress others or live off them, make them for yourself, because for a long time noone else will ever see it :D If you get it right, then you can start thinking about money and recognition.

I am making a computer game, spent months working on it and am just about to finish it. I'm having trouble pushing myself over the final hurdle, because all the challenge is gone (the game is basically finished, just some very basic stuff to go). Same problem as you: noone will actually care when it is finished, I lost my enthusiasm, so I'm really going to have to push myself :D

Anyway, it's a problem that confronts everyone: do it for yourself, and don't expect others to care for a LONG time.

However, have you considered posting your movies on one of those stupid flash websites. There are people posting movies far less interesting than yours (seriously, the crap that gets high ratings on those sites ). It will guarantee they get hosted, and appreciated in a community dedicated to flash movies.

You're right. I also make movies; but no one cares. Luckely I do it for myself. My movies are with real actors, and they most of the time only like there own parts.. My games look like a dead cat, but play funny. I'm going to make a game; with movie sequences in it, maybe that would work...

The movie was downloaded, but didn't seem to work... Crappy computer.

Well, it'll probably be in digital format (seeing that our deal for free film fell through, so we'd have to pull together another $1,500 to buy it in time for shooting this Friday) so I could send it if you really wanted to see it after it's done... but it'll probably be in excess of 300 MB, so I'm not sure how practical that'd be. I could definitely send you and Wally the basic script or whatnot, if you want to get the general concept of it. :)

One thing I'd really recommend (going off of Dosser here a bit) is finding a couple other people to make these movies with. Since January, I've spent over 80 hours working with 3 wonderful people writing, blocking, financing, scripting, and directing this film. Over the next month and a half we'll be shooting, which means much more time with my actors, editors, film crew and tech guys. (There are around 20 people involved overall)

While we'll probably never get more than 1,000 people to watch it (I recently found that we've put together a "premier night", so my "50" estimate goes up into the hundreds)* just making it was worth the effort- I've had some of the best memories ever sitting in a friends den discussing the semantics of camera angles. And while we might never impact and change culture, we’ve impacted and changed each other, and that’s what really matters. Right?

*To put that in relative terms, in the past two weeks, this thread has had nearly 500 views.

Support Laughing Games

Post by Santhosh CHRiS »

Gosh I feel like a real jerk asking this, but um... I'm kinda trying to buy a video camera and some studio stuff to make my cartoons much more professional looking plus trying to hire some actors for the voices so if you could please try to support me that would be GREAT!!

All you have to do is click on a few harmless google ads found at this link

http://lgames.hollosite.com/supportlaughingames.html

Don't worry it's 100% clean from spams or anything. Google Ads are totally safe and legal.

If all of you can click on atleast a couple of ads, that would be GREAT!

Thank you for your kind time and effort! Your support will be GREATLY appreciated :D
