Ok, so what happened to some companies that made some great games?

Atari, gone/owned by other company (check out their website... Atari is not Atari... otherwise we would have an Atari 20xx by now ) ... we can now download THEIR roms and emulators!

Sega, decides to make system, doesn't make a good system till Dreamcast, then goes 3rd party (and what happened, those Dreamcast systems only lasted a year)

... and a question: I only stumbled across this once in a google search for classic systems gone... however this one's wierd:
- it's a tape drive, type game
- came in between the Atari and Nintendo systems / not mass produced either ---no wonder it's so rare... can you find it?

...and other companies, where did Tradewest (made Double Dragon) go? They made a few million off that game! (company that made the GBASP version assumed that the game was old enough to remake... does this old company exist any more?)
... I know most companies that were good changed their name, when the SNES evolved...
Also, I actually found a website that (developed the Atari 2600's games) encourages the usage of ROMS! I'll post it when I find it

They never went from 3rd party back to 1st. They have always been a 1st party company until Dreamcast died. They did make a few games for Neo Geo Pocket Color but that's it for pre-Dreamcast-death 3rd party games.

Dreamcast was the biggest flop ever for one of the main game console competitors. It couldn't compete with ANYTHING. Sega went bankrupt/Not enough monies to produce a new system. However, everyone loves sonic, so they can stay as a game producer. I imagine Sega will be gone again soon, as 3D sonic never caught on as well as 2D.

Same with Atari; it couldn't compete, so irt switched to game making. Besides, we all know about their secret plans for a new system.

That list is junk. All you did was exclude the current systems... actually, you included PS2 and GBA on your list, which are still used by... well... everyone.

Each of those systems died out when a new version was released, or a rival company produced a new system that couldn't compete.

Software companies are mostely bought out and never heard from again, but still exist under a new name. I can't see double dragon ever comming back anyways.

The developers get moved around constantly, so it's impossible to know where they went.

NES was the greatest system ever i reckon. Not great graphics but classic games. I passed super mario bros 3 the other day. without whistles. Somekid passed it in 11 mins with whisltes and i'm trying to see how fast i can get with an emulator. But i passed it on the actual nes from start to finish. It took about 3 hours

Anyone else remember nes.. i still play it now

It's not like Sonic is their only successful franchise. The Virtua Fighter and Super Monkey Ball series, for example, have both proven to be relatively fruitful.

I still have one, and I'd venture to guess they're worth a LOT less than the DS or GBA or Color, even.

Most companies died after 9/11/2001 - the terrorist attacks on america.

The economy was down already - and once the twin towers fell, the software world fell as well - no jobs for 2 years. I am in software occupation so I know this. it was hard finding a job - took me 2 years to find a place.

The terrorist attacks critically harmed employment rates, but they really didn't destroy these game companies.

The video game crash of 1984 destroyed or severely crippled most game companies. Most died out with the release of 32-bit systems (SNES and Genesis) around 1991.

Atari is probably the biggest company that's still around after the '84 crash.

True. As technology progresses, new systems with better graphics replace the older systems & handhelds. However, Nintendo always has a way bringing back the old games. The old Game and Watch are long gone. You may find some simulators on the internet if you want to relive the nostalgia of playing them. However, Nintendo has made some plastic keychains with the old game and watch classic games. They have also the game cartridge for gameboy colour & gameboy advance called "Game and Watch Gallery" featuring some of the old classic Game and Watch games as well as the modern version of them starring characters from the Mario Brothers games.

I think NES is the best system ever. They have some of the greatest games like Mario 3, Contra, Double Dragon, Bubble Bobble, etc. All of the Nintendo systems I like except the Gamecube. The controller is clunky and all they're doing is remaking old games for the 400th time.

Speaking of great NES games, how about Shatterhand / Tokkyuu Shirei Solbrain? That was one game I really liked.
