Dumped on to XP Desktop during GAME

Post by Jigsaw_Psyche »

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced the problem of being dumped back to the XP desktop during gameplay.

It happens all the time when playing any "Tex Murphy" Interactive Movie game. I have VDM sound and launchpad, set the compatability options, etc... but I find the games work fine but throw me back to the desktop a lot, and I am currently at an impass in the game because of this problem.

I have already tried using DOSBOX but the game runs FAR too slow for it to work. The game was originallydesigned to run on DOS/WIN95.

Any ideas on getting it to stop kicking me back to the desktop?

The game may be demanding some system resource that Windows XP refuses to give. Windows XP is very paranoid when it comes to some DOS software so chances are, the only solution would be to get out of Windows XP altogether and figure out a way to load another operating system (boot disk, new install, another computer, etc.).

So how would I install another OS on my system for dual booting?

If your hard drive's Windows XP system partition occupies the entire hard drive, then you won't be able to do so without destroying your installation of Windows XP, unless it uses a FAT32 partition.

If your hard drive uses FAT32, then you can use FIPS to shrink that partition (using a DOS boot disk with the FIPS program on it).

Most XP users use NTFS, in which case you're stuck, unless you know how to use a RAM drive in DOS.

I'm sorry for being untechnically minded. The info I get when I click properties for my c drive says FAT32

The information needed to tell you this is very complex and there is a risk of making a tiny mistake and losing all your data. It may also give you a headache, and it's a fair amount of work. Do you want to do all this tedious labor for the sake of one game?

You need to right click on the program then go to properties then go somewhere then you'll see Windows something in gray then you press a button after you could change an maybe you will not get "dumped" out of the game
