descent 2 sound problem
hey everyone,
i have a strange and very frustrating problem with descent 2 in DOS(not windows, pure DOS). i ran the setup program which detected my sound card properly, and applied the v. 1.2 patch. every time i execute the d2.bat file, it goes to a blank screen and becomes unresponsive. i have to turn off my computer, it wont even reboot. now, if i go into D2s setup program and disable my sound effects, but leave music on, the program runs fine. i execute and it goes into the opening cutscene. this is very aggravating because 1.the game sucks without sound. 2. i know i have more than enough ram, processing power, and free space to run this game. here are my specs:
AMD K6-2 300 mhz processor
96 mb ram
running MS-DOS 6.22
4mb video ram
crystal cs4232 ISA sound card
and, if it matters, i have 601k free DOS memory when i try to play the game. please help because this game is a classic and i really want to play it.
thanks,
andrew

Hmm. Have you tried just running sound with music off? I know that for some reason, I can only play DOS games in Windows if I want sound (Without using the internal speaker), the problem is that sound will ONLY do either music or sound. Sometimes (rarely) it does both (Like for X-Com) except the sound is off timed, so something happens, then a second later the sound for it plays.
I can't really help you though, because like I said, DOS dosen't detect my sound card.

here is my current autoexec.bat and config.sys files:
autoexec:
SET SOUND=C:\SB16
SET BLASTER=A240 I7 D3 H5 P330 T6
SET MIDI=SYNTH:1 MAP:E
C:\SB16\DIAGNOSE /S
C:\SB16\MIXERSET /P /Q
@ECHO OFF
PROMPT $p$g
PATH C:\DOS;C:\GAMES;C:\PKZIP;C:\SCOMMAND;C:\64COPY;C:\DOS\DOSSHELL
SET TEMP=C:\DOS
LH /L:1,27952 C:\DOS\MSCDEX /D:IDECD000 /L:E
C:\DOS\MOUSE.EXE
config.sys:
DEVICE=C:\DOS\himem.sys /testmem:off
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS
BUFFERS=20,0
DOS=UMB
LASTDRIVE=E
FCBS=4,0
DEVICEHIGH /L:1,12048 =C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE
DOS=HIGH
DEVICEHIGH /L:1,40800 =C:\DOS\OAKCDROM.SYS /D:IDECD000
FILES=40
DEVICE=C:\PLUGPLAY\DRIVERS\DOS\DWCFGMG.SYS
with these settings, i get around 660k free conventional memory. should be enough.
