DESCENT, DESCENT 2 trouble

Post by Mike2 »

Before I explain my problem, here are my specs:
Pentium 200MHZ processor
130,548 KB RAM
PC DOS 6.3

Error I get when trying to run the game, DESCENT and DESCENT 2:
DOS4GW Runtime protected mode................. general fault error 2001, and other weird codes...

I think I'm getting a runtime error. Anyway, Did I got a runtime error, or what exactly I might of got?

1. If it occurs in an additional level, reload game and avoid sitiuation where that happened. If it doesn't help, delete level/mission.
2. Disable expanded memory manager.
3. Get DXes Click game name and 'patches' and select suited one.
NO Windows, NO DOSBox, DOS!

Although I did find a patch but I can't download the patch because the page won't load. The patch I tried to download is Descent 1.x to 1.4, but I'm not sures if that is DXes. which patch is DXes?

Sadly, DOS4GW does not work with DESCENT!

Here is the error I get...
"DOS/4GW fatal error <1008>: can't load executable file format for file DESCENT.BAT [1]" IS there anything else I can do?
(In case your going to ask (Do you have DESCENT.EXE, the answer is, no I do not have it.)

Wait a minute... I have the original Descent executable file DCNTSHR.EXE.
But I tried that with DOS4Gw, and I got the same error.

Increase the CPU cycles, hold 'Ctrl' and press 'F12' a few times. DOSBox starts out at a default on 3000 CPU cycles, might I suggest kicking that up to around 20k, if it still runs slowly just go up higher.

You want the patch to D1X (may have to patch to 1.40+ and then D1X).

If patch refuses due to nonsimilarity, use this command line:
patch -ignoremissing.
Forces patching. Took me awhile to find this feature on the net.

Sound may go weird.

You may get crashes; save often-ish.

Otherwise works neat AND fixes the darkness problem (brightness slider goes double length).
