When I run zool.exe or start.exe I get the start screen(the one with the grey box). The only way to get rid of it is by pressing escape, but then it quits the game back to windows. The same thing happens under dos.
And there is no use of waiting for the game to start, it's just the same text over and over again.
Can anyone help?

Apparently the introduction screen and the game itself are two different programs. The way it quits, it may be a Runtime Error or a Divide Overflow.
There are two possible solutions:
Use DOSBox: http://dosbox.sourceforge.net
Use TPPatch: http://www.qmw.ac.uk/~ugah006/gotools/tppatch.exe
To use TPPatch, copy TPPATCH.EXE file in the same folder as the game, run Command Prompt, CD to the game's folder/directory, type TPPATCH ZOOL.EXE and press Enter if the name of the EXE file is ZOOL.EXE (if the file is not ZOOL.EXE, replace ZOOL. with the appropriate filename (not start.exe as that works OK already for you).
Hope it helps...
